Samsung Galaxy Note 7 Recall – LAA/LUS

As you may have heard in several media reports, Samsung has recalled its Galaxy Note 7 due to faulty batteries that may cause a risk of fire while charging the device.

Due to the safety concerns surrounding this recall as well as inquiries we have been receiving from Flight Attendants, APFA feels it necessary to reiterate the Company’s decision to establish the following procedures:

  • Gate agents will deliver an announcement advising customers with Galaxy Note 7 devices to turn them off and not connect them to any power source onboard the aircraft, and to not stow these devices in luggage that may be checked in at the gate, but rather to place them in their carry-on

  • Flight Attendants should deliver the following announcement immediately following door closure:
Due to a recall of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the Federal Aviation Administration advises these devices remain powered off and not connected to any power source while onboard the aircraft. We appreciate your cooperation.”

Some Flight Attendants have expressed concern about the Galaxy Note 3 Flight Attendant tablet and whether they carry the same risk for fire. The battery in the tablet is NOT the same type of battery found in the Galaxy Note 7 that prompted the recall.

If you experience a battery fire in flight, please follow the procedures for battery fires in the Emergency Procedures section of the manual, pages 2.5 – 2.7.

If you own a Galaxy Note 7, please contact Samsung immediately for information on how to participate in the recall.

As always, be vigilant and fly safe.
