Yesterday, the aviation community suffered a terrible loss with the crash of Asiana Airlines' 777-200 at the San Francisco International Airport. Our thoughts and prayers go out to our brothers and sisters from Asiana Airlines, to the passengers, and to all those affected by yesterday's tragedy.

This aircraft accident serves as a reminder that we must always remain vigilant to the possibility of our environment immediately changing from normal to emergency, even after it appears we have touched down safely.

Congratulations are in order to the Asiana Airlines flight attendants for the successful evacuation of the 777-200 while facing such daunting circumstances. To see more than 300 people evacuated from the aircraft so quickly, using a limited number of slides, is a testament to the professionalism of the flight attendants doing what we are trained to do. Lives were saved today because of their response.

There will be a lot of speculation during the initial days of the investigation. Many preliminary reports have been cited regarding details of this event. Remember that we won't really know much until after the flight data and cockpit voice recorders are recovered and the investigators begin releasing factual reports. We will monitor the work of the NTSB closely as they determine exactly what happened. APFA has been in contact with the NTSB investigators deployed to this event and we will stay in touch with them and be ready to assist if necessary.
