Dear friends,
Gratitude and delight warm us at Chinese Whispers as the year draws to a close. We want to thank you for a truly memorable year – we couldn't have done it without you. Your support helps us to realize our vision of bringing to light the overlooked stories of the Chinese who helped build the American West, and your enthusiasm and participation inspire us to continue innovating engaging and meaningful ways to bring this history to life through storytelling and media.
We would be honored if you would give generously today to further our work.
This productive year saw great strides in all our key project areas:
Place-based community storytelling – we started the year with a blockbuster
workshop reading of our in-progress Bay Area production
Chinese Whispers: Golden Gate, on board the 1890 ferryboat Eureka at Hyde St. Pier in San Francisco. Featuring local stories, the multimedia event included a custom soundscape by sound artist
Jeremiah Moore and interactive audience story circles led by cultural writer
Arlene Goldbard, and was presented in partnership with the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park.
Community engagement programming – we presented the first
StoryTourTM of Locke in the Sacramento River Delta, the last remaining American rural Chinatown; created an interactive storytelling performance for the exhibition
re:Told at Root Division gallery; and curated the recent visual history event “
Living Memories,” produced in partnership with Open Show, featuring presentations from the Chinese Historical Society of America, Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, Friends of China Camp, and the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, along with excerpted CW stories.
Online mapping project – we completed R & D for
Chinese Whispers: Mapping the Traces, our exciting online mapping project that brings together research and storytelling, and we are poised to prototype the interactive Website.
Above all Chinese Whispers is about you, our community - we salute every one of you, and look forward to another fruitful year full of exciting developments.
Join us in bringing forgotten stories to light. Your
tax-deductible donation will allow us to continue our innovations in community-based heritage stewardship.
