Nourish Cultural Citizenship –
Support Chinese Whispers: Golden Gate

Dear Friend,

We're excited to let you know that 2 weeks into our Indiegogo campaign for the theater production of Chinese Whispers: Golden Gate, we're halfway toward our first goal! We're so grateful to everyone who helped get us here! Help us reach 70% by the end of week 3 – that's just 12 people giving A SHOUT (see side bar), or 30 people choosing A CHEER perk from the campaign.

Check out the great perks we have for you to choose from. But more than that, we offer you a welcoming, open door to cultural citizenship. Writer and cultural activist Arlene Goldbard says that "cultural citizenship makes everyone feel at home in their community; everyone feels that their heritages are valued." When that place of belonging gets covered over, people lose their cultural citizenship.

Our mission at Chinese Whispers is to uncover buried history and give voice to forgotten memories, in order to restore belonging and connect communities in our shared histories. Through story, we illuminate that kernel of belonging to honor the storyteller and the story told, and to bring it to you as a precious gift that nourishes all of us together. To be a part of the Chinese Whispers community is to be a cultural citizen.

Watch Arlene Goldbard explain how Chinese Whispers fosters Cultural Citizenship
In this video, Arlene talks about how first person stories are essential to creating community, and why it is important to support Chinese Whispers: Golden Gate.

Linking handed-down stories and stories from immigrants in Chinatown today, Chinese Whispers: Golden Gate  pays homage to the generations of Chinese immigrants who have shaped the Bay Area's cultural landscape.

Listen to Arlene and support Chinese Whispers: Golden Gate now! Each donation amplifies the impact of community voices and deepens cultural connections. We're halfway to our goal. Help us fill the rice bowl to the brim, so we can realize this important production and nourish community.

During this season of giving, give the gift of cultural citizenship – give to our Indiegogo campaign today!

WHAT OUR COMMUNITY IS SAYING
CHRIS CARLSSON
Co-Director, Shaping San Francisco, a CW partner
"Thanks to Chinese Whispers for bringing a beautiful, multi-layered, many-voiced presentation to a wide (and extremely appreciative) audience."
KRISTAL IP
Community Storyteller

"It was very moving to be able to share the story of my grand uncle’s detainment on Angel Island. It was not only an honor, but also a way for me to connect our family’s history with others from the San Francisco community.
BJ FONG
Young Adult Immigrants Workshop Participant

"I thought that as a new generation our stories would be so different from the older generations', but I was shocked by the similarities. We share the same challenges and have similar goals – and that's mind blowing to me."
