Nkwichi now offers another activity to immerse yourself in the wonder of Africa’s 3rd largest lake; stand up paddle-boarding.
Besides being an excellent work out for the body’s core, the forward-facing technique of paddle-boarding is an amazing way to take in life on the Rift Valley lakeshore. A mother and two daughters who recently visited Nkwichi were treated to a unique experience in the lakeshore village of Mala. Having brought various items of women’s apparel to donate to local women, Nkwichi helped to bring the two groups together in what is known as a ‘troco de experiencia’ in Mozambique, or ‘exchange of ideas’.
In the polygamist lakeshore culture, women are often married off at an early age and along with few education opportunities and a lack of perspective of women’s status in the wider world, are unable to realize their potential. The three ladies spent the day in the village, chatting with the local women and swapping stories of their lives and cultures. This was facilitated through a round-table discussion and a makeover session with donated beauty products from the guests, including a raucous bra-fitting melee which saw flailing straps, flashing elbows and even a broken mirror, highlighting the importance of something that many women take for granted.
The three ladies returned to Nkwichi with braided hair, knowing smiles and hopefully a head-full of memories.
