Greek Centennial Campaign Reaches 1 Million Dollars in Gifts

2015 was an amazing year for fraternity and sorority life as our community celebrated 100 years of an extraordinary Greek experience and launched the largest campaign in our community’s history. Due to the generous support of the Panhellenic Council, Geraldo and Erica Rivera, the Hunter White Memorial Fund, and the Interfraternity Council, several of the lead donors to the Greek Centennial fund, our community has continued to benefit from the philanthropic support of many alumni and Greek chapters. We recently hit the 1 million dollar milestone in cash gifts and pledges toward our two million dollar goal. This success towards supporting our Greek community would not have been possible without the support of many of you. Thank you for giving back to your Greek community!

Reaching this half-way point in our campaign is because of many Greek alumni, chapters, parents, and friends of the community who are giving to support student programs and the construction of the Geraldo Rivera Greek Heritage Park. The Park will be a permanent shining jewel in the heart of the Greek Village and will publically showcase the accomplishments and history of the UA Greek community over the past 100 years.  Contributions toward student programs are focused in four key areas: academic success, leadership development, career development and health and wellness.

Construction of the park will begin this month in March and finish this summer. We hope that you will join us October 27th-29th, 2016, Homecoming weekend, as we dedicate the Geraldo Rivera Greek Heritage Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony and block party on Greek row.

If you would like to learn more about giving to the Greek Centennial fund or how you can honor your friends, family, or Greek brothers and sisters in the park visit uagreek100.com/donate or contact Johanne Ives, Assistant Director for Development at johannej@email.arizona.edu or 520-626-1664

2015 Greek Hall of Fame Inductees

Patrick Murphy
Kappa Sigma
2015 Greek Hall of Fame Winner

Over a twenty year career in the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, Mr. Murphy made tremendous contributions to this state as an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Division and as the Chief Counsel for the Financial Fraud Division. In the latter role, Mr. Murphy represented the State in civil action against then governor Evan Mecham in the case State of Arizona v. Mecham. Mr. Murphy's team won the case and successfully recovered funds from the governor that belonged to the state. Since 1991, Mr. Murphy has been in private practice in the self founded Phoenix firm Gutilla, Murphy, Anderson, where he continues to shape the legal framework for Arizona business.

Mr. Murphy’s dedication to Kappa Sigma is remarkable, as was an integral part in the construction of the Gamma Rho house on Greek Row, where Kappa Sigma is still housed to this day. Mr. Murphy has served on the chapter’s Housing Corporation since construction, and served as Vice-President of the Kappa Sigma International Housing Corporation from 1995-1998. Mr. Murphy has been honored as Kappa Sigma’s International Man of the Year in 1990, and received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the University of Arizona in 2001. Tonight we continue to honor Mr. Murphy for his professional accomplishments and service to the Greek Community through his induction into the Order of Omega Greek Hall of Fame.

Marc Herman
Alpha Tau Omega
2015 Greek Hall of Fame Winner

Our second inductee into the Order of Omega Greek Hall of Fame is Marc Herman, alumnus of Alpha Tau Omega, and CEO of Wildcat Retro Brands. Mr. Herman started in the clothing business as a student in 1982 by designing and selling the popular Hawaiian style shorts called jams to fraternities and sororities across campus. Marc had a vague idea about how clothing was made because his sister was a competitive figure skater and his mom made all her costumes. He worked with sewing contractors and fabric resources in Los Angeles, honed his craft while back at the U of A and eventually the Jams business evolved into the complete line of t-shirts and fashionable sportswear which is the Original Retro Brand of today.

Mr. Herman’s company designs and manufactures collections with leading sports entities including The College Vault and over 700 Universities, The National Hockey League, The Major League Baseball Players Association and Minor League Baseball. The Original Retro Brand can be found in over 200 fashion forward boutiques from coast to coast, high end premium stores including Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Dillard's, as well as our very own UA BookStores.

Mr. Herman was recently honored with the UA Alumni Association’s Professional Achievement Award this past homecoming and was invited to be the featured clothing designer during Tucson’s Fashion Week last fall. Marc loves the University of Arizona and his passions for fashion and entrepreneurship are shared during the many speaking engagements he gives to UofA students.  Congratulations to Marc Herman, 2015 recipient of the Order of Omega Hall of Fame Award.
