Reflections on the Journey of competitive snowsports

-February 16, 2016

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s athletes are in the thick of the competition season.  From the six year-old competing in the complimentary Steadman Clinic Vail Cup to senior athletes striving to qualify for national or collegiate team status, athletes are working hard to be a little bit better every day than they were the day before.  With the many podium performances and competition results to be had this time of year, it is easy for athletes and parents to lose sight of the most important outcomes from an athlete’s journey at SSCV–the life lessons to be learned through the vehicle of competitive snow sports which shape them into successful adults.

Financial Aid-Helping Dreams Come True

-February 9, 2016

One of Ski & Snowboard Club Vail’s (SSCV) key initiatives over my time with the organization has been providing opportunities for children to fulfill their snow sports dreams regardless of financial means. In the past nine years over $1.3 million in financial aid has been awarded to SSCV athletes. In the current season SSCV will award over $230,000 in financial aid to more than 120 youngsters covering up to 75% of SSCV program fees, more than a tenfold increase in financial aid from the $20,000 awarded annually in the recent past. Philanthropy pays a huge role in making this assistance possible.

Dear SSCV Community,

Now that we are midway through this winter season, we'd like to remind you all again of the importance of your volunteer time. SSCV relies heavily on the support of the SSCV community to be fortunate enough to host our many home races and competitions throughout the season. Offering SSCV athletes the opportunity to miss less school, sleep in their own beds,  eat home cooked meals the night before an important race or competition and avoid travel related costs at home competitions is an advantage that requires the support of our community in order to continue. Please consider signing up to volunteer for the following upcoming events online. Reminder to current SSCV families-Failure to meet your seasonal requirement WILL result in the loss of Eagle County and Colorado discounts the following season.
  • Nordic JNQ Race - February 20 & 21
  • DU NCAA Western Regionals Alpine Races in Beaver Creek -  February 26 & 27
  • DU NCAA Western Regionals Nordic Races at Maloit Park - February 26 & 27

  • IFSA Regional Big Mountain Competition - March 27

  • Alpine Surefoot Championships -  April 4-7

Peak Performance

Mid Season- Mental Tune Up Series by Erin Beskid-SSCV Peak Performance Director

Wednesdays @ 6pm at the Minturn Fitness Center

Why mid-season? Research shows that using mindfulness meditation during times of high intensity can not only keep but also increase our abilities to focus attention and handle stress. The skills in this series are based in mindfulness but topics are sport specific in preparation for championship season.

The series is aimed at athletes age 14 and up. However younger athletes are welcome to attend as well as parents curious for both their athlete and themselves. These sessions are educational in nature. The content will build throughout the five weeks but you are welcome to drop in as well. All Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athletes and families are welcome.

Topics for the series include:

Wednesday, February 17: Awareness of Physical and Mental Stress - Avoiding Burnout

Wednesday, February 24:  Re-framing Pressure Situations

Wednesday, March 2:  Working with Worry - dealing with thoughts and emotions

Crested Butte Big Mountain Headwall Event

Crested Butte, known for its extreme terrain, hosted this two day regional event offering SSCV Big Mountain athletes some of the most challenging venues that they will ski all year. Day 1 was held on Hawks Nest, where athletes needed to do well in order to qualify for finals on Day 2 on Headwall.

Crested Butte Regional results on Headwall included:
  • 10-11 girls: 1st Molly Reeder
  • 10-11 boys: 1st Finn Griffith
  • 12-14 girls: 2nd Stella Addis
  • 12-14 boys: 4th Liam Mattison
  • 15-18 boys: 4th Finn Andersson
SSCV athlete Molly Reeder showed great technique, a high line score, and fluid skiing to earn her the top spot 9 points ahead of 2nd place. Finn Griffith also had a high line score and went big both days without hesitating and stomping each run smoothly earning him 1st place in the U12. Molly also finished first last weekend at Steamboat.

Scout Mattison, as many would agree, showed some of the best skiing for girls all weekend. On Day 1 she executed an immaculate run and qualified 1st. On Day 2 she unfortunately lost a ski but quickly put it back on and finished strong to earn her 4th place.

Stella Addis stayed on her feet both days and showed off her great mogul technique and fluid skiing to earn 2nd place.

Liam Mattison chose lines on both days that earned him big points to land him in 4th place in a very stacked field of 12-14 year-old boys.

Finn Anderson went massive both days and showed zero hesitation on airs. His runs were some of the fastest of the weekend and wowed spectators. Finn earned a very respected 4th place against some of the best competitors in the state, some of which just returned from Andorra.
Thank you to Jerry Nichols for the photos.

Report from Lead Freeski Coach Bob Sonntag

The USASA Aspen Snowmass Series halfpipe competition was what drew us over to Buttermilk where we competed under cloudy skies with just a bit of new snow on the pipe. It was cool to compete in the same pipe that the X Games was held in not long ago, with a few less spectators this time. There were some comments about sticky snow but those who were able to find speed in the pipe, and amplitude out, came out ahead. In 10-12 Boys, Adam Eisenhauer was our top finisher in 4th place, and in 13-15 Men Ari Diamond-Topelson earned a podium spot and a shiny bronze medal!

Congratulations guys!

Rocky Mountain Freestyle
February 6-7

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail hosted a Rocky Mountain Freestyle Mogul event on Cookshack this past weekend, on February 6 and 7.  After a week of consistent, heavy snowfall Freestyle athletes took advantage of the blue skies and warmer weather to compete against one another on sun-softened bumps.  Over fifty competitors participated in Saturday’s Rocky Qualifier Series event, while Sunday’s Rocky Development Series competition witnessed over forty-five athletes.

Freestyle Program Recent Highlights

Congratulations to SSCV Freestyle athletes for their performances in recent away competitions!

Tess Johnson recently won the Calgary NorAm duals last Sunday and took 3rd in the single mogul event last Saturday.  She is leading the NorAm tour.
Emerson Smith won the NorAm duals for the men with teammate Hunter Bailey in 3rd. Casey Andringa took 2nd in singles and Hunter was 4th. Matt Leseur was 5th in duals. The SSCV men are now in 2nd Smith, 4th Bailey and 5th Andringa for the overall NorAm tour headed into this week's NorAm events in Park City, Utah.  Click here for press coverage on the Calgary NorAms.

At Breckenridge this past weekend, Hannah Miles won Saturday's Rocky Mountain Freestyle open mogul and Monday's duals. Katie Coyne won Sunday's open mogul and the SSCV girls went 1-4: Coyne, Miles, Kaitlyn Harty and Kai Owens. (U13) Tegan Large took second in Sunday's duals in the dual against overall champion Miles.

Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Nordic athletes a dominant force at Soldier Hollow Super Qualifier

-January 29-30

The SSCV Nordic Team has much to celebrate as a result of performances over the past several weeks. After a successful event at Steamboat Springs, a large contingent of SSCV cross-country skiers traveled to Utah to compete in the Soldier Hollow Super Qualifier on January 29 and 30. Hosting over 710 competitors, the Soldier Hollow Super Qualifier is the second largest junior race in the country, and widely considered to host the most competitive field of junior Nordic athletes in the United States outside of the US Cross Country Championships and the Junior National Championships.

During the past few weeks, Burton hosted six rail jam qualifier events all over the United States.  The top six from the 15 and under division as well as the top six from the snowboard open division were invited to Seven Springs, Pennsylvania for the final qualifier.

Congratulations to our four athletes that qualified for the Seven Springs event: Dylan Okurowski, Jack Coyne, Fynn Bullock and Nate Panlilio.  Dylan recently traveled to Tahoe for one of the stops where he won the 15 and under competition, then competed again at Copper and took 3rd in the Open Division. He now has the option to compete in both events at Seven Springs. The top two spots in the Open Division at Seven Springs are invited to the Burton Rail Days in Japan!
