Lifetime Skills Outweigh Results for SSCV Nordic Team

- January 19, 2016

The Ski & Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV) Nordic Program is off to a great start with multiple podiums at its first Junior National Qualifier in Crested Butte, a National Champion, personal bests and first time experiences for junior athletes at US Cross Country Championships, a successful High School Race at Maloit Park and two well attended Vail Summit Orthopaedics Nordic Town Races for community members of all ages.

Personal growth of our athletes

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing athletes develop in all areas of their lives during their journey at SSCV.  Recognition goes out today to Eric Zdechlick, Elsa Perkins and Vlad Shambarger for their personal growth as members of the SSCV Nordic community.

Getting Started and Olympic Dreams

When asked, I always recommend that parents enroll their children in SSCV's season long Future Stars weekend program at the youngest possible age of six (assuming they can get on and off the lift by themselves and ski or ride Golden Peak). This critical age for mental and physical development is an ideal time for children to gain the necessary skills to quickly progress in their sport in a fun and low pressure environment including gates, moguls, park, pipe and all mountain terrain for skiers and riders, and skate and classic technique for Nordic athletes. It is also the perfect time for children to develop their love for competition in the complimentary Steadman Clinic Vail Cup series. Just like maximizing the potential of your child academically by starting in Kindergarten, your child’s snow sports potential is maximized by starting at the same age in Future Stars.

The Passion Ignites

These early childhood moments spark a passion which provides children with focus and teaches them lifelong lessons through the vehicle of competitive snow sports. As this passion ignites so does the need to spend more time on snow and more time developing the physical and mental attributes needed to take their sport to the next level alongside thriving in a rigorous academic environment. SSCV’s full-time athletic programs in combination with its Academic Partners-Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy, Vail Mountain School and Winter Tutorial-enable children to balance athletics and academics in support of this passion, fully immersing themselves into a way of life focused on developing the total child.

News & Announcements

SSCV Communication and Social Media Policy

With the rapid expansion of online communications, including social media, and an ever-evolving set of “apps”, children are often more knowledgeable in this space than their parents.  This expansion is not only impacting personal communications but it is also hitting the “commercial” sector by storm, including for-profit businesses, educational institutions and non-profits.  SSCV is not exempt from this phenomenon.  Our current and prospective athletes live in this online world of real time, collaborative, global communications.

We want to take this opportunity to review with you the most common methods SSCV uses to communicate to our membership (parents, athletes, alumni, friends and supporters of SSCV) and prospective families.  We also want to share with you SSCV’s communication and social media policies which have been put in place to protect SSCV athletes in an era when online communications make everyone’s lives more “permanently public” worldwide than ever before.

SSCV Clubhouse Drop off and Pick up Procedures

In order to make the drop off and pick up process at the SSCV Clubhouse as safe, efficient and convenient as possible, SSCV has adopted the following procedures for drop off and pick up of athletes. Also note that the Town of Vail and Vail Resorts Base Operations expect SSCV to manage congestion and delays on Vail Valley Drive so we also ask for your cooperation in minimizing our impact on the traffic flow.

Important:
Please remember to arrive for pick up at the time your child's program finishes per the SSCV calendar for your child's program.  Coaches and staff will help to have athletes in front of the building ready to go.

Read more so you are fully informed of drop off and pick up procedures.
