SSCV Named 2015 USSA Alpine Club of the Year

First club ever to win this award two years in a row

It was a very proud moment when SSCV was named USSA 2015 Alpine Club of the Year last Friday evening at the USSA Chairman's Awards Dinner in Park City.  SSCV is the first repeat back to back winner in the 16 year history of the award, the first four time winner and the first to win for the third time in 6 years. Read the cover story in the Vail Daily by clicking here.

Become an SSCV Welcome Family/Ambassador to a New SSCV Full-Time Family

Remember what it was like to be new to SSCV?

Remember what it was like to be new to the SSCV full-time program, or possibly new to SSCV or the Vail Valley altogether?  You probably had at least a few questions you might have liked to ask a fellow parent.  You also might have enjoyed seeing a familiar SSCV parent face at school, the Fall Spectacular, the Celebration of Winter Cocktail Party, the first team meeting or the first competition.

SSCV is launching a Welcome Parent/Ambassador Program to pair veteran SSCV parents of full-time athletes with a new full-time SSCV family in the same snowsport, ideally with a similar age child in the same school, to provide a friendly, familiar face and a fun, approachable resource for the day to day questions that may arise.  Where do I park?  Where do you get your hair cut?  Where do your children usually eat lunch on weekends during the winter season?  Do you have a favorite local hike?  How do team trips work?  Who do I ask about “x”?  And more...?

Please consider becoming one of those welcoming, familiar faces and a priceless resource for a new SSCV full-time family.  For more information and to get involved as an SSCV Welcome Family/Ambassador, email me at sschmidt@skiclubvail.org or call me at 970-790-5161 by June 1 so we can kick off the program and introduce you to your new family by early this summer.
Thank you for your support!

Sincerely,

Sharon Schmidt
SSCV Director of Admissions and Communications

Why this Camp?
It is well documented that off-season training opportunities can provide a significant improvement in skill in a short period of time. Having exclusive access means that SSCV programs can operate in a relaxed environment, generating a high volume of directed skill development. Exclusive access also allows SSCV  Program Directors to customize training environments specific to the needs of SSCV athletes. With unlimited flexibility in course/feature design, non-existent lift-lines (waits can be as long as 45 minutes per run at Mt. Hood), and on-site video analysis and tuning services and/or facilities, Mt. Bachelor is the pre-eminent off-season training camp.  Athletes will enjoy a variety of terrains.

The Entrada Lodge, the home to SSCV athletes and coaches for the June camp, borders the Deschutes National Forest and is nearby to some of the finest mountain biking and hiking trails in all of the Pacific Northwest, a resource SSCV coaches and campers utilize as part of afternoon dryland activities.  With room to spread out and relax, areas to socialize, and exclusive access for SSCV athletes and staff, the Entrada is the ideal complement to a world-class training facility.   Breakfast and lunches are provided at the Mt. Bachelor base lodge dining facilities and buffet dinners are provided at the Entrada Lodge.

For questions regarding the Mt. Bachelor Camp contact:
Alpine-Karen Ghent: Alpine Program Director - kghent@skiclubvail.org
Freestyle-John Dowling: Freestyle Program Director - jdowling@skiclubvail.org

The Entrada Lodge provides lodging for SSCV athletes and coaches during the Mt. Bachelor Camp.  www.entradalodge.com

From John Dowling-Freestyle Program Director

This week we have an RMF Camp at Arapahoe Friday through Monday. This camp is open to all FIS & RMF competition series skiers (not RQS or Devo).  If you do plan to ski Comp series this coming season, then this camp is for you. The van will leave at 8:00 each day and return around 5:00. Registration is online.

Bachelor camp online registration is still open.  This year's camp features high alpine training on the upper mountain and exclusive access to our mogul and air site. For those sending equipment out in the van (bikes, skis, etc.) the load up will be at VSSA on the 27th of May.

June Ramp Camp at Steamboat will run June 15-30. Details and signup will be available on the website soon. July ramp camp will run July 7-22 and signup will be available online. Athletes will be able to book either the full camp or a portion of the camp.  The main idea is to get more intensive blocks of training in a camp environment.

Grigs and I will also be targeting tramp and ramp dates specifically for Development skiers  (Devo and RQS). Once we have all the info from Steamboat we will add these to the camps webpage.

Please let me know if you have questions about our snow and water camps!

SSCV Summer Academic Support Program for Online Students

New this summer, SSCV is offering an academic program geared towards students getting ahead in online courses, and for parents who would like to create some additional structure and support around their child’s summer online academics. This program will help to get students started, have accountability, and receive support throughout the summer without sacrificing flexibility.
  • Dates: June 29th through August 6th (6 weeks)
  • Days: Mondays and Thursdays
  • Schedule: 11 am-4 pm
  • Where: Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy, Think Tank
  • Cost: $150 + cost of online course

SSCV Academic Director, Kristina Krone, will be running this program.  She will develop pace charts and goals with each student that will realistically reflect the student’s summer schedule. With biweekly check-ins, the student will be held accountable to this schedule and will maintain an engaged and consistent pace. This 11 am-4 pm window will allow a designated time for each student to do his or her work, while further allowing time for questions and some subject-specific support (foreign language knowledge limited to Spanish). Parents will also receive communication as to pace chart, progress, etc. While students are welcome to stay for the full sessions, the window is made flexible in order to accommodate different summer training schedules.

Please note that all online classes should be pre-approved by the student’s school.

To register:
1. Go to www.skiclubvail.org, log into your “MySSCV” account
2. Select 'Forms & Documents'
3. Select 'Additional Options'
4. Scroll to the bottom and select 'SSCV Summer School Program 6/29-8/6 (Mondays & Thursdays)'
5. Click 'Submit'
* Accounts will be charged upon registration. If you have any questions regarding payment, please contact Betsy Cuthbertson at bcuthbertson@skiclubvail.org.

Please email Kristina Krone at kkrone@skiclubvail.org with any program questions.

Personal Training at the Minturn Fitness Center

Great opportunity for some one-on-one training with the MFC Strength Coaches!

The Performance Team at the Minturn Fitness Center is excited to reach out to SSCV families and let everyone know that Personal Training is available for any athletes (siblings and parents as well) looking for some one-on-one training. We want to help everyone reach their goals for the Spring and Summer no matter if you are getting ready for the upcoming mountain bike season or ski and snowboard camps coming up!  Personal Training is designed as an optional enrichment to, and not a substitute for, any dryland training included in an SSCV full-time athlete’s program, and as such SSCV full-time athletes are expected to attend all of their training group’s dryland sessions.  All ages and ability levels are welcome!

Please contact the MFC front desk at 970-790-5090 to inquire about packages and set up some personal training with the best coaches in the Valley!  MFC membership is a pre-requisite to purchasing Personal Training.   The MFC front desk can provide details on Spring membership specials if you are not already an MFC member.
