Ski & Snowboard Club Vail Hosts Three Community Competition Series

-January 26, 2016

As the Vail Valley’s oldest non-profit, SSCV has developed many traditions over its 53-year history. Perhaps none ring truer to the spirit of the organization than the Vail Cup, Alpine Town Series and Nordic Town Series.

It’s all about community

Each of these events represents the importance of community, as exemplified by the generosity of Vail Valley sponsors who make each series possible and the spirit of locals and visitors alike who come out to compete.   These events are made possible by Title Sponsors The Steadman Clinic and Vail Summit Orthopaedics. Not only do these events provide a great opportunity for locals and visitors to be a part of a community-wide competition series, but they also help generate funds “For the Kids”.

Two New Trustees Join SSCV Board

Mike Imhof

Originally from Tacoma, Washington, Mike Imhof joined the Vail Valley Foundation in 2007 and had been serving as Senior Vice President overseeing operations, corporate sales and development, before being appointed President and CEO in November, 2015.  Imhof came to Vail in 1997 when he joined Vail Resorts as a national sales manager. During his time at Vail Resorts, Imhof had responsibility for Strategic Alliance, Licensing & Trademarks and the front range pass sales and front range ticketing programs.   Imhof now lives in Wolcott with his wife, Ellen, and two boys Michael and Miles.

TJ Johnson

TJ Johnson's first job in the Vail Valley was as a Sports Illustrated photographer's assistant during the 1989 World Alpine Ski Championships. He had a round trip ticket back to NY for when the event was over, but ended up never leaving. After the Championships were concluded, Johnson started working for Vail Associates (now Vail Resorts) and continues to work for them today. After a lengthy career in Mountain Ops with Beaver Creek Ski Patrol, Johnson currently works in the VRI Information Systems department and manages a team of database computer programmers. His passion for the ski industry and for his family drives him to be very involved in this community where he has served on the Board of Directors for Eagle County Schools and is a current Vail Valley Soccer Club coach. He is married to Carol and has three children, Anabel (18), Tess (15) and Tommy (13).  Tess is a full-time SSCV Freestyle Moguls athlete, Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy student and member of the USSA Freestyle Moguls C Team.

Peak Performance

Mid Season- Mental Tune Up Series by Erin Beskid-SSCV Peak Performance Director

Wednesdays @ 6pm at the Minturn Fitness Center

Why mid-season? Research shows that using mindfulness meditation during times of high intensity can not only keep but also increase our abilities to focus attention and handle stress. The skills in this series are based in mindfulness but topics are sport specific in preparation for championship season.

The series is aimed at athletes age 14 and up. However younger athletes are welcome to attend as well as parents curious for both their athlete and themselves. These sessions are educational in nature. The content will build throughout the five weeks but you are welcome to drop in as well. All Ski & Snowboard Club Vail athletes and families are welcome.

Topics for the series include:

Wednesday, February 10: Building Action Oriented Confidence

Wednesday, February 17: Awareness of Physical and Mental Stress - Avoiding Burnout

Wednesday, February 24:  Re-framing Pressure Situations

Wednesday, March 2:  Working with Worry - dealing with thoughts and emotions

Wednesday, March 9: Focus Training - skills around choosing where to put your attention

Cost: Free

Snacks will be provided.

Please contact Erin @, 970-471-8852, with questions or to rsvp.

Peak Performance Director Erin Beskid's Blog

Stay the Course

Character, Courage and Commitment are SSCV's core values. In this post I want to highlight commitment. Why commitment? During the middle of anything: the season, the school year, a work project…etc, it is normal to have ups and downs, peaks and valleys. It is natural and healthy to question “am I doing enough?” “is this the right thing?” “how can I be better?” But this also needs to be balanced with commitment and trust. If the plan is set well in the beginning, STAY THE COURSE. It might be tempting to change equipment, change your mental approach, change skills or ways of training, etc. However most of the time this is reactionary, not well practiced skills and thus will not help and perhaps hurt performance.

The stoke was sky high that weekend and the efforts put forth by all those competing was truly outstanding. Noah's stylish skiing paid off, plus I saw new and innovative skiing not just by those on the podium but the entire team! Aaron's huge three, Ryan's butter take-off and Scream'n Seeman, and Lachlan's first "in comp" seven are only a few of the tremendous feats the team accomplished over the weekend!
