SSCV Opportunity Fund Supporting Dreams “For the Kids”
- December 22, 2015

During my time at Ski & Snowboard Club Vail (SSCV) our most impassioned discussions have evolved around providing opportunities for the children of our community to fulfill their snow sports dreams without being hindered by their family’s financial means.  What better embodiment of our motto, “For the Kids”, than to provide needed financial assistance to youngsters from the moment they set their foot on the hill or Nordic trails as 6-year-olds starting out in Future Stars to their step onto an Olympic podium?

Financial aid for SSCV athletes
Over the past nine years over $1.3 million in financial aid has been awarded to SSCV athletes. In the current season SSCV will award over $230,000 in financial aid to more than 120 youngsters, covering up to 75% of SSCV program fees. This represents a more than tenfold increase in financial aid from the $20,000 awarded annually not long ago. These increases are extraordinary for an organization of our size, but do not begin to cover the gap in our athletes’ financial needs as they advance up the competitive pipeline.

Personal Funding Obligations
With twelve SSCV athletes competing in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and 35 SSCV athletes named to a United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA) national team or training group for the 2015-2016 season, it is no wonder the ability of our athletes to finance their dream is getting more difficult.  The higher the athletic achievement, the more expensive it often becomes to support continued growth and development.

A little known fact about those athletes nominated to a USSA national team is the USSA requirement that athletes pay fees to support their newfound status with the team. In some cases helping to fund the overhead costs of the national program in addition to their travel costs around the world these fees can be considerable. Only as the athlete advances within the national team to international prominence does the financial support increase. This funding requirement is difficult enough for athletes who have graduated from high school, but for those achieving this status while still in middle or high school, it becomes an almost impossible task to focus on fundraising while balancing academics, athletics and international travel schedules.

From this reality the vision for the “Opportunity Fund” was born.  Click here to read more.

C3 Awards

December  C3 Athlete and Staff Winners and Athlete Nominees

Congratulations!

Congratulations go out to SSCV's December C3 SSCV Athlete winner Bella Mauro and December C3 SSCV staff winner Makayla Brown. Read on to learn more about their outstanding displays of Character, Courage and Commitment (the 3C's).

SSCV would also like to recognize the following SSCV athletes for the honor of being nominated for the December C3 SSCV Athlete Award.

  • Paula Cooper
  • Katie Bervy
  • Andrew Rogers

December 2015 C3 Athlete Winner - Bella Mauro

Bella Mauro is twelve years old and in her second year as a full-time snowboard athlete at SSCV Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy.  She enjoys wakeboarding in the summer as well as a bit of skateboarding with the team during dryland.

Bella has been demonstrating SSCV’s core values of Character, Courage and Commitment (the C3 values) on a regular basis this year. She has always been a polite enjoyable person to be around and this year she has shown SSCV coaches that she is ready to take her riding to the next level.

Bella is committed to dryland training and on-snow training every day with very few missed sessions. Her coaches have also been very impressed with her new diet choices and healthy eating on a daily basis. It is making a difference on snow as well as in the gym, showing her commitment to snowboarding.

Bella continues to push progression at a very young age and has been on the podium at our first two USASA events of the season. She is also focused in the Minturn Fitness Center, working hard and showing great improvement, enabling her to perform better both on snow and in the trampoline room.

Bella truly personifies SSCV’s 3C’s.  We are proud to announce her as SSCV’s December C3 Athlete Award Winner.

December 2015 C3 SSCV Staff Winner - Makayla Brown

Makayla Brown joined SSCV in the fall of 2014 as an alpine coach.  She was born and raised in Maine, graduated from Carrabasset Valley Academy and went on to race for Colby College where she majored in Economics and minored in Administrative Science.  This year Makayla is coaching a group of U14 alpine girls (ages 12 and 13).

Makayla exemplifies SSCV’s core values of character, courage and commitment (the 3C’s) in her role at SSCV.  She shows up for any project at any time on any venue. Her continued commitment to helping out with whatever comes her way each day is both motivating and inspiring to everyone around her. With a smile on her face Makayla always jumps in to help, even if it is something she has never done before.  She is having good success with her course setting and athlete conditioning sessions, and remains eager to learn how to have more and more impact on her athletes.

Makayla’s goal for this ski season is to share her passion for skiing and ski racing with her athletes and help them achieve their personal goals, while keeping it fun for them every step of the way!

We are excited to award Makayla the December C3 SSCV Staff Award!

U12 Blue Boot Award

Congratulations!

Nickco Palamaras, last week's U12 Blue Boot Award winner, handed it off to this week's winner Zoie Palmer.  Nickco said he saw Zoie have a tough day this week and she kept trying every run, never giving up.  After that tough day she came back the next day and put it all together and had a fantastic rest of the week with great focus and energy.

The U12 Blue Boot Award is a Peer to Peer award given every Sunday to a U12 athlete whom the previous week's recipient picks for being a hard worker, doing something outstanding for their peers, prompt to training/skiing or some other extraordinary deed.

Peak Performance

Blog Post from Erin Beskid

Hi Families,

During this holiday season, we think about being with those we care about most and maybe those that can’t be with us. On the athletic side it is also the time when the competition/training season can ramp up. Although balancing these two can be stressful, this extra family time can also be a time of grounding, centering and validation. And out of these feelings can come performance.

We all need to feel connected and aligned with family and yet also have a unique meaningful identity. These needs can be met by spending time together doing family traditions, taking personal time to relax/have fun and simply enjoying how you function as a family unit. With these needs of contentedness and autonomy met we are more likely to be our best self and perform to the best of our ability whether it’s at a competition, at work, at school or in our relationships.

I hope you each get to enjoy some family time, whether it is a day, a week or a few weeks. Enjoy it knowing it’s good for the soul and the performance.
