[L'Art de Recevoir]

It's Autumn and true to the season, we're not just heading back to school, we're building one next door at 98 Portland Road. In the next few weeks we'll be opening the doors to a brand new space we like to simply call School. Curating a curriculum filled with lessons on everything from nutrition, to flower arranging, to styling the table, to food preparation, to expert household tips, holiday decorations, kids cookery, arts & crafts, and much more, we're looking to answer many of the questions we often get at the shop: How do you set a table properly? How do you make the perfect tarte tatin?  Any tips on how to seat a dinner party so the conversation flows?

School is all about a little something called "l'art de recevoir." It's the French term for hosting, but as they put it so elegantly, it's so much more than that: It's a true art. It's the magic of inviting friends and family into your home and giving them a wonderfully memorable experience—the tastes, scents, colours, decor, conversation all come together to create a unique and beautiful memory.

When you head to a dinner party at a friend's house, you might not remember exactly the food you ate, or the candles on the table, or exactly which flowers were in the arrangement, but you'll remember the way they made you feel.  That's l'art de recevoir.

We're beginning with bi-weekly cooking courses along with a series of occasional "Masterclasses" featuring accomplished experts, the first of which is next week, featuring American stylist Annette Joseph. (Read more below...)

We look forward to welcoming you to our courses at School, which are meant to put a spring in your step, a few fresh tricks up your sleeve, and a new dish (or two) on the table.

And do keep in mind, we're in beta, and learning the ropes as we go along.  So over the next few months, we'll be unveiling more and more classes and events at 98 Portland Rd. Keep up with us here on Meanderings and on Instagram.  These are exciting times!

[Meet the Curator]

Meet Marcelo de Campos: West London's best kept secret and the man behind some of the most exclusive dinner parties and events in town, and he's bringing his know-how exclusively to us here at School.  Having worked in some of the best kitchens in the world—from Claus Meyer's (of Noma fame), to the hallowed halls of Claridges, to some of the most exclusive private London residences—he's not only a chef, but a trained expert in l'art de recevoir. And, with his Brazilian roots, he brings a sense of fun and warmth to everything he touches.

Marcelo is leading our weekly schedule of local, seasonal cooking classes and is also coordinating a curriculum filled with exciting in-the-know experts on everything from viticulture, to flower arranging, table decor and more.

In short, he's the man to know at School: Get in touch with Marcelo here if you're interested in teaching or hosting a Masterclass event with us.

[To Start With...]

On Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the day, Marcelo will be teaching food prep courses with a healthy bent around local, seasonal ingredients and popular dishes and cuisines.  His very first classes will be themed around apples, and students will walk away from their 1-2 hour course with several new recipes under their belt—a healthy salad, a delicious smoothie, and a crowd-pleasing tarte tatin—along with a few S&B treats.

Starting this Thursday 24th September, the first in our series.

[Annette Joseph's Tabletop Workshop]

We're lucky to catch Annette Joseph, the American stylist, cookbook author, Instagram phenomenon, and expert on all things tabletop, on a whirlwind trip through London...

With countless magazine photo shoots under her belt, regular TV appearances, her own tabletop book, and a series of styling workshops in Italy and Morocco (that always sell out), we're more than a little excited to know she's headed our way.

She's making a special appearance at Summerill & Bishop to teach a tabletop workshop just for us.

You'll learn:
How to set the table like a pro.
How to make the ideal tabletop flower arrangement.
How to make a versatile votive holder.

Our T.T.O.T.W

There are now many new additions and colourways to the BB Flowers linen range in store, both for napkins and tablecloths.  (We think the gold print looks just stunning in contrast with a bright pop of colour—in this case, the S&B Bumba glasses in green.)
