October 2019
October has arrived, with its coat of many colors, and some very spooky and wholesome fun to fill your dance card with at the Patterson Library!

On Tuesday, October 1st, Best Sellers Book Group will discuss “The Soul of an Octopus” by Sy Montgomery, and will prepare to begin reading: “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” by Heather Morris for the Tuesday, November 5th meeting. Thursday, October 3rd brings our new Fall Into Fall Story Time with Miss Emily & Ms. Amy beginning at 5:15 PM in Patterson Park – this four week special story time is for children in pre-K – second grade, and will feature fun stories about the autumn, and crafts! Thursday October 3rd will also feature James Hoggard in the Octagon Gallery giving an Art Talk about his beautiful photography currently on display. Music Matters will also meet on Thursday, October 3rd in the Main Reading Room; if music is your passion and avocation, this creative listening group is for you – come check it out!

Tuesday, October 8th is Crafternoon in Patterson Park from 5PM – 6PM with Ms. Jamie Perry, who will be making Halloween and Harvest themed crafts with us. Jamie Perry will then teach an adult class in the Octagon Gallery on card making, which is one of her, many specialties! Please call 716-326-2154 to reserve your seat for this free class on October 8, 2019 from 6PM – 8PM; space is limited to the first fifteen students. Literary Circle will meet on Saturday, October 12th at 1PM in the Main Reading Room to discuss “The Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler, and prepare for “Lucky Jim” by Kinsley Amis for their Saturday, November 9th meeting at the library.

On Tuesday, October 15th, we will host its second annual Community Connections Night, welcoming old and new neighbors, businesses, and agencies alike to network, sample wares, and learn about each other, and the town and village of Westfield – this event is free and open to the public, and we encourage you to come down to the library from 6PM – 8PM to network with us! Wednesday, October 16th we kickoff our joint Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation grant funded program with the YWCA of Westfield: Women Empowered through STEAM or W.E.S. with a talk given by two educators from Jamestown Community College’s Manufacturing Technology Institute at 1PM in the Main Reading Room. Come learn about the Workforce Development Grant to attend MTI at JCC, and the many educational programs available to you. On October 17th we welcome Career Concepts of Jamestown into the Main Reading Room for a mini-recruiting event from 1PM – 3PM; just bring your resume and firm handshake with you! Also on October 17th, from 6PM – 8PM we will host our second concert series by the Ekstasis Duo in the Main Reading Room – come listen to the mesmerizing repertoire of these two outstanding musicians, and some of their students from the SUNY Fredonia School of Music. Finally to wrap up this week, on October 18th from 5PM – 7PM we will host Twe’Evening for our 10 – 12 year old community members, and from 7PM – 10PM we will host Teen Night.

Tuesday October 22nd at 6PM will bring the Alzheimer’s Association down from Buffalo to host a session on the “10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s” in the Reference Room, while the Blue Marble Discussion Group meets in the Main Reading Room to discuss “The Source: How Rivers Made America and America Remade its Rivers” by Martin Doyle, and prepare for their November 26th meeting, where they will discuss Anna Clark’s “The Poisoned City: Flint’s Water and the American Urban Tragedy”. October 25th and 26th is a new joint fundraiser for the Patterson Library, in conjunction with our partners: LSCFTA, CCHS at the McClurg Mansion, The Westfield Cemetery Association, The Village of Westfield, and the Westfield-Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, and sponsored by Johnson Estate Winery & Howard, Hannah Holt Realty – Westfield Cemetery Tours! Tickets are only available for purchase at
www.tinyurl.com/Y6EM7FX5. Tickets are $20 per person for a horse drawn carriage tour of the cemetery, or $15 (ages 13 and up) or $5 (ages 12 and under) for a guided walking tour of the cemetery. Each ticket includes a lantern and a refreshment before or after your tour. Tickets are limited, and the tours will go from 6PM – 10PM on both evenings; once tickets are sold out, they are sold out! We are so excited to have you join us for this new Westfield tradition! Also on Saturday, October 26th from 1PM – 3PM down in the children’s area we will host Spooky Fun! Come enjoy different spooky stations or watch “Hocus Pocus” on the big screen with us while we enjoy snacks and friendship!

On October 28th at 6PM, we will host our second Big Screen Musicals in the Main Reading Room, featuring “Sweeney Todd” on the big screen – this movie is rated R due to adult content. We will have popcorn and beverages on site. Culinary Creations Club meets on Wednesday, October 30th in the Main Reading Room at 12 Noon to share and sample all dishes “Veritably Vegetarian”, come join us! On October 31st from 6PM – 8PM, the Write Now Writer’s Group in conjunction with the library will host “Hannah’s Haunted Tales”. Come join us throughout the library as you enjoy All Hollow’s Eve with refreshments and spooky tales with and about the Patterson Family! Finally, on Friday, November 1st, the Octagon Gallery will unveil “Cletus Johnson: A Retrospective” from 7PM – 9PM.
 
We continue to sell tickets for the quilt raffle at the library for $5.00 per ticket. Remember we have a limited stock of tickets available for purchase. Once the two-hundredth ticket is sold, we will pull the raffle winner. Check out the library or library webpage, or Facebook page to see the beautiful quilt!
Don't forget our recurring monthly events: Makerspace Monday’s every Monday from 4PM – 5PM in the John W. Ellison Memorial Mobile Makerspace, Knit & Knatter Club meets every Tuesday at 1PM in the Main Reading Room, Storytime Fun every Friday at 9:30AM in Patterson Park, Write Now Writer's Group meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month in the Main Reference Room.
