February 2019
Welcome February! It's Black History Month. Did you know that Dr. Gladys West invented GPS Technology? Do you know who invented modern home heating? Alice H. Parker! Charles B. Brooks invented the street sweeper. What do all of these people have in common? They're all persons of color. Remember that there is no American history without Black history. Patterson Library has a diverse collection of materials all about great persons of color - come check them out.

It's also the month of love, or dread, depending on how you feel about Valentine's Day. Historically Valentine's Day is a celebration of the life of St. Valentine, a Roman martyr celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church for defying Emperor Claudius II, who decided that single men made better soldiers than married men. He outlawed marriage for young men, but Valentine in opposition of the Emperor continued to perform the rite of marriage in secret, until Claudius found out and had him put to death. There are other stories about St. Valentine, or Valentinus, you can read more about him at the library. Nonetheless we have put together some very exciting programming for you to partake in. On Valentine's Day we will host a Friend Speed Dating, This event will be from 6 PM - 8 PM in the Main Reading Room. We will have ice-breaker questions and snacks, and will have a large timer on the big screen to help keep us on track. There are lot's of spaces available, so call Nancy today at (716) 326-2154 to reserve your seat!

On Thursday, 2/21/19 from 6 PM - 8 PM we will host Choose-Your-Own-Date Night. Sometimes it is not easy to plan a night out, or agree on what to do, and sometimes it's hard to find a babysitter! We will provide child care downstairs, while you enjoy a few unique stations upstairs, including a wine pairing station, video gaming station, board game station, and a scavenger hunt. Romance is not a prerequisite, so feel free to bring a friend or two to enjoy a night you'll not soon forget.

We have also begun our Tri-County Arts sponsored classes for the year! This month we have Feng Shui with Kim Kellogg on Friday, 2/8/19 from 4 PM - 7 PM (yes, we are open late this Friday). Kim will teach Feng Shui methods, and afterwards we will enjoy armchair travel on the big screen through parts of China, while we sip hot and sour soup from The Wooden Spoon, and enjoy authentic Chinese appetizers from Food King. Bring your appetites! Every Thursday in the month of February, Ann Gembala will teach an introductory course on knitting. Please call Nancy at 326-2154 to RSVP for her classes - there is still plenty of room.

Don't forget that Diane Andrasik from Fredonia will be showing her gorgeous photography in the Octagon Gallery beginning at her opening on Friday, 2/15/19 from 7 PM - 9 PM. Teen Night will happen on Friday, 2/22/19 from 9 PM - 11 PM in the Children's Area - this will give your family time to head over to the YWCA from 6 PM - 8 PM to watch The Incredibles 2 on the big screen and enjoy some refreshments!

We are also excited to announce that the library has recently purchased four Therapeutic Sun Lamps that may be taken out at the Circulation Desk and used in the Main Reading Room to soak up some Vitamin D and help chase those winter blues away. Come check yours out today! Remember that the library does have a notary public on staff, available to you for free.  All programs are free and open to everybody - so tell a friend, and bring 2 more with you! See you soon.
