March 2019
It seems March has decided to greet us as a lion - with a wintry roar! Here is hoping it truly bleats out as a lamb. March brings us so many exciting changes. The Spring Equinox is on Wednesday, March 20, and prior to that, we will be setting our clocks ahead one hour as we leap into warmer weather, or at least thoughts of such.

March 17 is St. Patrick's Day. When I was little, my parent's told me that as people of Italian decent, we celebrated St. Patrick's Day because he was Italian. After reading the fables about how St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, I thought they were crazy. As I grew older and wiser, and found more information on St. Patrick, I discovered he was indeed a citizen of Rome. Therefore, whatever your heritage may be, on St. Patrick's Day we all are Irish. Bring your kids down to Patterson Library on Saturday, March 16 for a St. Paddy's Day Celebration, featuring a Disney Movie, and a scavenger hunt for golden coins left by a lucky leprechaun.

March 15 is known as a day to beware. It is the Ides of March. Historically, this is the day that several Roman Senators conspired to, and successfully carried out the gruesome murder of Emperor Julius Caesar. Sometimes you will hear a person labeled a "Brutus" or "Brut", this less than affectionate term dates back to one of the chief conspirators, Brutus, a Roman Senator who was the first to plunge his sword into the doomed Emperor. Check out our book display about Julius Caesar, Rome, and murder.

We have so many wonderful programs this month, including our new armchair travel series - this month we are off to Ireland. Culinary Creations will present recipes from Ireland, and the United Way is back with us on March 14 to help with your taxes. Adult Hang-Out Night is a night for adults to come hang out at the library, and play a game or just browse our selection and chill on a comfortable chair. We will have child care again, so call ahead to reserve a spot for you, a partner or spouse, a friend, and any children you will be bringing. Do not forget about our Intro to Drawing Classes this month, taught by the spectacular Kathy Gullo, and next month Mandala Workshop with Kristen Barber-Afionis! Please call the front desk to reserve your spot in both classes.

Happy Spring!
