UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHAPEL
"You Are Home"

New Year's Resolutions

It is not the end of January and the overwhelming amount of red, pink, and heart shaped things is overwhelming. We just finished celebrating the New Year, and we think that we can finally rest until you go to the market or the gas station. Don't get me wrong, by no means am I opposed to Valentines Day. It is a holiday in which we can openly show our affection for others, and be grateful for the friends and loved ones that have stayed with us through out the years.

In the Spanish-speaking world, Valentine's Day is also known as "El Dia del Amor y la Amistad." This roughly translates into Day of Love and Friendship. In my opinion, I think that the friendship part is sometimes overlooked. We forget to tell our friends that we appreciate their company and support in the good things, and not so good things, that happen in our lives. For me, I feel that it is a great time to thank the friends of the University Lutheran Chapel for providing a welcoming and encouraging environment for all people. This is especially true for all of our students.

As we approach the middle of the academic quarter, it is important to remind all students that we are a support system to get them through these particularly stressful times. Just as  it is important to demonstrate love to those around us, is also important to practice a version of "me time" that'll make us happy (or at least a little less miserable). From siting to drink a cup of tea in silence to having your private session of silent disco, it is important to take care of one's physical, mental, and emotional health because self love is the best love there is.

Receivers of Love
Sermon Series on Ephesians

The foundation of taking time for yourself, or having “me-time,” is recognizing that we are merely recipients of Love. As the world places pressure on us to be the doers and to strive for progress, the Grace of Christ Jesus reminds us that life before God is always receptive. He created us by no effort of our own, and so our very lives we received. He gave us new life in Jesus and gave us immeasurable gifts. “How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is! He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in him. Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love” (Ephesians 1, The Msg). By Christ’s focused love for us we are cared for, loved, and sustained to continue to engage the world around us. But we do so not losing sight of our essential receptivity before God, nor our essential call to be givers of the same love first shared with us. Once you think about it, self-love is more about allowing Jesus to love you, and this is a way of life greater than any momentary period of time.
