SFARI today announced the launch of SPARK, an online research initiative designed to become the largest autism study ever undertaken in the United States. SPARK will collect information and DNA for genetic analysis from 50,000 individuals with autism — and their families — to advance our understanding of the condition’s causes and accelerate the development of new treatments and supports.
Christopher Walsh and his team are interested in genetic mechanisms of cerebral cortical development and abnormalities of cortical development resulting in intellectual disability, autism and epilepsy. Walsh will review recent work on 'somatic mutations' — de novo mutations that are present in some brain cells but not in all cells of the body —in several neurological conditions associated with intellectual disability and seizures, as well the relevance of somatic mutations to autism.
