Cash injection. After declining for 4 quarters straight, digital health funding stayed flat quarter-over-quarter at $3.4B in Q1’23. Deal count rebounded slightly, experiencing a 1% uptick QoQ. Care delivery and navigation tech startups secured the greatest share (44%) of the total funding pot, followed by monitoring, imaging, and diagnostics tech startups with a 21% share. ADoption challenges. Netflix has the largest subscriber base among streaming services — yet, the company lags behind its peers in subscribers paying for its ad-supported tier (launched in November 2022). As of March 2023, Netflix’s ad-supported plan had 938K US subscribers — whereas Hulu, a long-time advertising player, had 20M. Some advertisers are frustrated with the small size of Netflix’s ad-supported customer base and are pushing the streamer to promote the service more broadly. Uh oh, Nuro. Autonomous delivery unicorn Nuro recently announced that it plans to lay off 30% of its staff — about 340 employees. This isn’t Nuro’s first headcount reduction — as shown above, its employee count had already been trending down following a 20% cut to its workforce back in November 2022. Other top-funded US-based autonomous delivery firms are scaling back in the face of regulatory challenges as well. We dive into this trend and what it means for the autonomous delivery space here.

Population drop. The global population has grown from less than 2B in 1900 to 8B+ at present. However, global births are expected to trend down while deaths rise as we approach the year 2100. Deaths are actually expected to surpass births before the turn of the century, ending global population growth. Sad. Depression rates in the United States have hit record highs, according to a survey conducted by Gallup. The percentage of US adults that have ever been diagnosed with depression has hit 29% this year. Additionally, nearly 18% of US adults report that they currently have or are being treated for depression. These are the highest levels recorded by Gallup since 2015, when it started measuring depression using its current form of data collection.
