This is how made-up terms catch fire:

1. Media talks to one person at Gartner.

2. They take this person's “voodoo analysis” and call it a trend. Remember: the plural of anecdote is not data.

3. Media site packages it up with an un-nuanced clickbait headline.

4. Then a whole bunch of SEO shops churning out low-grade content start writing articles about “How to quiet hire successfully in 2023.”

And like magic, a made-up trend is born.

Be skeptical out there. Lots of FUD created based on the above playbook.

The BIG report

Now, as promised: our State of Venture 2022 Report has officially launched. 

Dive in to get insight into what went down (literally) in the venture ecosystem last year.

Like annual funding to US-based startups, which dropped by 37% year-over-year. Still higher than 2020, however.

And other regions saw even sharper funding declines: LatAm & Caribbean (-62%) and Asia (-40%).

Africa, however, saw funding jump 35% YoY to reach $3.1B — a new record for the continent.
