3,2,1…we have liftoff. Last year saw a record number of successful rocket launches to orbit. With rocket launches on the rise, low Earth orbit is getting increasingly crowded. Breaking point. Healthcare systems across the globe are overwhelmed with patient demand — even in some of the world’s richest countries. In Switzerland, there are fewer beds available in the intensive care unit than at most points during the Covid-19 pandemic. This marks the latest chapter in a taxing 3-year stretch for healthcare workers — from 2020 to 2021, there was a nearly 40% increase in US doctors reporting emotional exhaustion, and the number of doctors that said they would choose their career path again dropped by 10+ percentage points. Great unifier. Ninety-six percent of US households reported having a microwave in 2015. And nearly all (99%) of those households said that they used their microwave at least once a week. What did that usage amount to in terms of electricity costs for each household in 2015? Seventeen dollars a year, on average.
