3 acquisitions: Big Tech continued its recent acquisition spree. Amazon bought self-driving car startup Zoox for $1B — a leap into autonomous ride-hailing that will bring the e-commerce giant into competition with companies like Google’s Waymo. Meanwhile, Microsoft bought CyberX for a rumored $165M to boost IoT security for its Azure cloud platform, and Apple picked up device management company Fleetsmith. 479 unicorns: Communication platform Agora, performance management startup Workhuman, and used car marketplace Cazoo all raised funding at $1B+ valuations to become unicorns this week. $17M: AI drug discovery startup Cyclica raised $17M. The company was included in our most recent AI 100 list of the most promising AI startups in the world. See 9 of the biggest AI trends to watch in 2020 in this report. 

9%: Indonesia-based superapp Gojek said that it would close down its lifestyle business and lay off 9% of its staff — about 430 employees. The company, which offers a wide range of services including ride-hailing and payments, has raised over $4.5B.
 

$225M: Health insurance startup Oscar Health closed a $225M mega-round. The Alphabet-backed company has now raised almost $1.5B in disclosed funding. We look at how the company is looking to use customer experience and tech to disrupt the digital health insurance space in this strategy teardown.

70+ stores: Microsoft said that it would permanently close most of its physical retail stores, including 70+ in the US, as it shifts its strategy to focus on e-commerce. The move comes after the Covid-19 pandemic forced the company to move much of its retail operations online, but Microsoft didn’t explicitly cite the pandemic as a reason for the closures. 14 notifications: France’s Covid-19 contact tracing app was downloaded 1.9M times within 3 weeks of launching, but only sent 14 notifications warning users of potential exposure in that time, according to a government official. These early results — with the low number of notifications being attributed to users not marking themselves infected after a Covid-19 diagnosis — point to some of the challenges facing contact tracing tech.
 

$2B: Amazon announced a $2B fund to invest in companies working on technology that could contribute to a low-carbon economy. 19%: Researchers have mapped 19% of the ocean floor, up from only 6% in 2017, according to the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project. The initiative aims to chart the entire seabed by the end of the decade — information that could improve tasks like ocean navigation, laying undersea internet cables, and climate forecasting. 
 

1.2 miles: Archaeologists discovered 20 large shafts that form a 1.2-mile-wide circle around Stonehenge. The pits are estimated to be 4,500 years old and are about 15 feet deep and over 30 feet wide. Though the purpose of the shafts is unclear, researchers say that they may have been markers to help people navigate sacred sites.
