What’s up with investment in healthcare?

Our mid-quarter update looks at how Covid-19 is impacting deals and dollars to healthcare startups:

• Q2 could actually finish strong, with a 6% rebound in dollars going to private healthcare companies compared to Q1, per our projections. This is largely due to funding upticks in Asia and Europe, where reopening is underway. 
• Our data suggest Asia could see its largest healthcare funding quarter to date at ~$4.8B, beating the past record set in Q3’18. 

Mega-deals, such as DNA sequencing equipment maker MGI Tech’s $1B funding, propelled the funding expansion.

Deal activity is also on the up, at a run-rate to end up 2% globally in Q2, compared to the previous quarter.

Compared to the same quarter last year, Q2 is on track to see a near 10% drop in deals.

Networking fiends unite

Almost overnight, tech solutions for social distancing began to appear, as companies developing everything from  remote learning software to AI-enabled video analytics tackled the challenge of keeping people 6 feet apart.

This week, we’re featuring the latest in social distancing tech: synthetic group selfies. Our patent analytics tool surfaced a  patent grant from Apple that would make it easier to snap a group pic without squeezing everybody behind an iPhone.

Apple’s interface would create a composite of images — still or video — pulled from multiple devices. Users could decide on the visual arrangement themselves, or they could let the system place users in the frame based on relationships. (Let’s say, for example, you want to put together a selfie of your extended family. Apple would know to place your mom, whom you text frequently, closer to you than Kyle, your second cousin once removed.)
