Growing pains. While China’s GDP grew by 8.1% in 2021 — recovering from 2020’s low base amid strong exports — its plummeting birth rate could threaten its economic growth in the years to come. The country’s birth rate dropped to a record low (7.52 births per 1,000 people), with 10.6M births overall compared to 10.1M deaths last year. As deaths come close to overtaking births, China has been stepping up policies to increase fertility and improve productivity to offset declines in its working population. |
