Leaving the nest. We crunched the numbers: Airbnb alums have founded 100 companies. The cohort has raised a combined $2.5B in equity funding. Three companies have attained unicorn status and 1 — former Airbnb employee Brian Armstrong’s Coinbase — has IPO’d. We also dug into the Uber Mafia here.

App wars. Apple’s app advertising business is now responsible for nearly 60% of all iPhone app downloads that come from ad clicks. It tripled its share of the mobile app advertising market within 6 months of introducing privacy changes that made it more difficult for third-party ad networks — like Google’s and Facebook’s — to target consumers. Facing an increasingly complex advertising landscape, brands and retailers are turning to marketing attribution vendors that can help them comply with new privacy standards and connect data from their entire marketing ecosystem.

Buying the dip? Despite China’s regulatory crackdown on its tech sector, venture in the country charged ahead in Q3’21. If we disregard Ant’s outlier round in Q2’18, this was the strongest quarter ever for China-based startups across deals and funding. Among all investors globally, Sequoia Capital China took the crown as the quarter’s top investor, inking 1.5 deals per business day.

Swift as the coursing river. In 2020, almost $140T was sent across borders. Analysts estimate that SWIFT, a financial messaging network, handled 90% of the transactions. But as customers demand faster payments, a rising group of fintech companies as well as financial services incumbents are aiming to grab market share from the network by making cross-border payments more seamless, secure, and inexpensive.
