What a time to be alive
Hi there,
Happy New Year, folks.
This is one of the final headlines I read in 2018. We live in wonderful times.

New year, new moves
From autonomous vehicles to flying robotaxis to mobility-as-a-service, the way we get around is changing.
We take a look at the 21 biggest trends in auto & mobility that you should watch for this year.

So hangry
The US throws away 160B pounds of food every year. Around 33B pounds of that is from restaurants and grocery stores. Meanwhile, 1.2M people go without a meal every day in NYC alone.
So Robert Lee created Rescuing Leftover Cuisine to try to close the gap.
The nonprofit organization collects unused food from restaurants and delivers it to city shelters, soup kitchens, and social service agencies. It collected over 792,000 pounds of food in 2017.
Politico has the full story on how the organization is benefitting both hungry New Yorkers and local businesses. Check it out in The Blurb below.

You have so much potential
Light detection and ranging (lidar) technology produces extremely accurate 3D visuals of a car's surroundings — crucial for autonomous driving.
The technology used to be considered too costly, but it's gaining more and more attention as improvements are driving costs down and increasing reliability.
Lidar is one of the Threatening trends we discuss in our Auto & Mobility Trends In 2019 report. Download it here.

That floating feeling
In 1991, 1 out of every 5 mattresses sold was a water bed. But only a few years later, they lost their appeal as fans of the original product aged and mattress companies started using memory foam to get that floating feeling.
Now Charles Hall, the creator of the original product, wants to revamp the water bed in the time of Casper.

Fintech for seniors
The number of people age 65+ in the US is set to hit 64M by 2025, and nearly 100M by 2060, according to the Population Reference Bureau.
We mapped out 20+ fintech startups that are emerging to meet the financial needs of this growing population. Expert Intelligence clients can see them all here.
