Hot potato. Amazon may be the top dog in US e-commerce, but it’s yet to make much of a dent in grocery. Combined with Whole Foods (which it acquired for $13.7B in 2017), it accounted for 2.4% of the US grocery market over the past 12 months vs. Walmart’s 18%. Amazon’s grocery initiatives are facing strong competition from increasingly digitally-savvy heavyweights like Walmart and Kroger as well as delivery players like DoorDash, Instacart, and Gopuff.

Positive thinking. Mental health tech startups pulled in a record-breaking $5.5B in funding in 2021, up 139% from 2020. As the pandemic continues to exacerbate mental health issues — like anxiety and depression — we expect demand and investor interest in digital tools that enhance mental healthcare delivery to grow.​

A tale of 2 stocks. Zoom has lost its pandemic shine. The video conferencing app — which surpassed ExxonMobil’s market cap in 2020 — is now just over 1/10th the size of the oil & gas major. We look at 25 industries and tech shaping the post-Covid world here.

Home sweet home. Technology is transforming the way we buy, sell, rent, manage, and invest in real estate. Amid growing industry adoption of the tech, investors reached into deep pockets to back property startups — or those developing real estate tech — at record levels in 2021, coming off a dip in 2020. But the excitement could be cooling as tech stocks slide, reportedly putting a damper on private company valuations in recent funding rounds.

You’re grounded. HSBC bankers are traveling a whole lot less than they used to. Business travel by the bank’s workers has dropped by 96% from 2019 to 2021. Even in a post-Covid world, the bank has no plans to return to its pre-Covid travel numbers. It’s planning a “50% reduction in travel pre-Covid to post-Covid” as it seeks to reduce its carbon footprint.
