Chatty chatty bot bot. OpenAI launched ChatGPT — its generative AI chatbot — at the end of 2022, and its capabilities and use cases quickly catapulted it into ubiquity. Amid the swelling hype, companies offering AI-backed services have watched their stocks soar. For example, audio and speech recognition company SoundHound AI’s share price rose 94% over the first 10 days of February. And BigBear.ai, an AI-powered analytics and cyber engineering solutions provider, has experienced a 561% increase in share price since the start of the year. How has the hype played out in the private markets so far? We highlight key trends in our State of Generative AI report.

End of an era? By the end of Q4’22, quarterly blockchain funding had fallen 70% from the start of the year to hit its lowest level since 2020. After 2 consecutive quarters of decline, this down quarter didn’t really come as a surprise, especially after the November announcement of FTX’s bankruptcy sent shockwaves through the market. Better shape up. Electric vehicle (EV) sales hit 10.3M in 2022, marking a 1.6x increase year-over-year. Notably, total EV sales in 2022 were up 103x from a decade prior, when around 100K EVs were sold. While this growth bodes well for the broader clean energy transition, the rising EV battery waste associated with this trend could stand in the way of progress. As a result, automakers are currently deploying strategic investments and partnerships to find ways to promote more sustainable practices through EV battery recycling and reuse. Explore

Mom and dad. The percentage of young adults (individuals aged 18 to 29) living with a parent in the US rose steadily from 1960 to February 2020. That share then spiked following the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. It jumped from 47% in February 2020 to 52% in July 2020 — a proportion not seen since the Great Depression. Keeping with a longstanding trend identified by Pew Research in 2016, at the time of the spike, young men were still more likely to be living with a parent than their female counterparts.
