Don’t go changing to try and please me. Before the turn of the millennium, many of the number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 incorporated a key change — e.g., when “My Heart Will Go On” shifts from E Major to A-Flat Major near the end…shivers. Since then, however, a key change has become a major liability for any song hoping to claim the top spot. Over the past decade or so, the element has largely been absent from Billboard Hot 100 chart toppers.
