A flicker of hope. Growth in carbon emissions is slowing down. In the early 2000s, the global rate of emissions produced increased by 3% each year. However, over the past decade, this rate has only increased 0.5% year-over-year. Two factors that have brought emissions growth to a near plateau are: (1) our global economy has become less carbon intensive; and (2) reforestation has picked up to partially offset deforestation. Stay with me. Apple has spent more than $550B on share buybacks over the past 10 years. While it has spent $50B (on average) buying back its own shares each year, its spending has risen to $89.4B this year amid ongoing market turbulence. Apple sits comfortably at the top of the buyback charts — it has outspent the second-highest repurchaser by at least $30B each year since 2018. Don’t go changing to try and please me. Before the turn of the millennium, many of the number-one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 incorporated a key change — e.g., when “My Heart Will Go On” shifts from E Major to A-Flat Major near the end…shivers. Since then, however, a key change has become a major liability for any song hoping to claim the top spot. Over the past decade or so, the element has largely been absent from Billboard Hot 100 chart toppers.
