Tiger Global took the crown as 2021’s top investor, and it’s moving even faster in 2022. 

Yeah, yeah — we know the narrative is that tech investing is slowing down cuz the markets are choppy. Not yet. Sorry, bubble prognosticators.

We analyzed all of Tiger’s deals since 2017 to break down its vision for tech in this report.

And now, here is this week in charts. 

The biggest cat. Tiger Global backed 335 deals in 2021 — up 334% from 2020’s 79. In 2022, it’s accelerating its dealmaking. The firm is averaging 2 deals per business day so far this year, despite a rocky few months for fund returns and tech stocks. We dig into how Tiger is funneling more capital into emerging markets, shifting its focus to early-stage companies in 2022, and investing across industries here.

The emperor’s new clothes. Americans generated over 13M tons of clothing and footwear waste in 2018 — up from 1.4M tons in 1960. Estimates suggest the number of garments produced worldwide each year has more than doubled since 2000. As customers increasingly push for sustainable business practices in retail, tech solutions are emerging to extend product life cycles, develop less resource-intensive ingredients, and more.

Got it in the bank. Families in the US have more in their bank accounts than before the pandemic. Low-income families have seen the biggest proportional increase, with balances about 70% higher than in 2019, for an average ~$1,300. Across the board, the extra savings (estimated at $2.6T) could increase spending on travel, dining, and more. 

Corps go all in on fintech. CVC-backed fintech financing bounced back in 2021 after double-digit declines in 2020. Deals and dollars to fintech companies increased 62% and 202%, respectively. 2021’s $33.2B in CVC-backed fintech funding was more than double the previous record set in 2019.

(Not) on the road again. Americans are moving to new homes a lot less than they used to, according to US Census Bureau data. In the 1950s, about 20% of the country’s population moved each year. Now that number is down to around 10%. Several factors could be contributing to the decline, from increasingly similar labor markets across the country to the advent of internet access.
