Step back. We crunched the numbers: funding to startups globally fell 23% QoQ to hit $108.5B in Q2’22. This marks the second-largest quarterly percentage drop in funding in a decade. For some perspective, funding in the quarter was still the 6th highest on record. Deals also fell 15% QoQ as market volatility shook the tech landscape. Get the details here.

Throw it in the bag. After two years of supply chain snarls — which wreaked havoc on retailers’ ability to track and manage inventory — inflation is creating new inventory challenges. Urgency is evident, with earnings call mentions of “inflation” and “inventory” climbing alongside “supply chain,” per a Flexport analysis of CB Insights Earnings Transcripts data. Retailers like Target and Walmart have seen their inventory levels mount as delayed orders begin to arrive and consumer spending shifts. Discounts are coming in hot.

Zoom in. Remote has become the name of the startup hiring game. From 2015 to 2019, about one-third of new hires were based in a different state than the main company headquarters, per Carta data. The pandemic flipped a switch. In 2022 so far, 62% of startups’ new hires have been out-of-state. 

Money machine. TikTok is not only capturing more eyeballs — it’s also capturing more ad dollars. The viral video app is projected to see $12B in revenue this year, up from $4B in 2021 (mostly from advertising). It could prove a threat to the online advertising giants Google and Meta as it starts to capture more media spending. 

Got wealth? It takes an average net worth just over $5M to be considered “wealthy” in San Francisco in 2022. That’s far more than the other 11 metros surveyed by Charles Schwab, with survey-takers in New York, for example, pegging “wealthy” at $3.4M.
