Hola,

Uber made a huge move in the autonomous vehicle space this week by acquiring self-driving truck startup Otto for a reported $680M.

Not much is known about Otto since it was in stealth as recently as 3 months ago. But here's the assessment of George Hotz, the 26-year-old outspoken founder of Andreessen Horowitz-backed startup comma.ai, which is developing driver-assistance kits for use in existing vehicles. Hotz has publicly trashed publicly-traded Mobileye’s driver-assistance tech, ridiculed Elon Musk and Tesla (he had a dartboard with Musk’s face on it in his office), and called Google’s self-driving car “fairly dumb.” But this is what he said on the This Week In Startups podcast:

I like Otto, I don’t speak highly of too many companies in this space. Otto is a bunch of ex-Google guys who got fed up with the fact that Google didn’t ship … I think they’ll do well, I’m happy they’re not in the same product segment as us. They’re winners.

Not faint praise. Ironically, it seems Otto's autonomous tech could now very well emerge as a competitor to comma.ai's eventual products as Uber integrates Otto's tech & talent.
