Films for Farms!
Join us June 23rd, Saturday night in University Heights as we kick off our first movie screening of the month! Bring your blankets and picnic baskets, sit back, relax and enjoy! We’ll be screening the movie “Dive” in a fun outdoor space right across the street from Birney Elementary in University Heights. Arrive at 7:30 p.m. and catch up with friends old and new, and then the show starts at 8:00pm on the grass at New Vision Christian Fellowship, 4353 Park Blvd. Bring your favorite beverage (non-alcoholic of course!) and expect some of San Diego’s best food trucks to be in the parking lot. Don’t forget your blanket. Beach chairs are welcome, but you will be asked to sit behind those on the grass. The movie is open to the public and donations from the Films for Farms series will go to support our continued efforts to build edible gardens at local elementary schools. RSVP by clicking here!

We would like to give a special thanks to our sponsors: Squeeze Play! and The Outdoors Indoors for supporting our series. Make sure to check them out - they are super delish! If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, we have 3 more open spots available for sponsorship opportunities. Email for more information. Hope to see you there!

Montgomery Middle School Garden Build Out!

Montgomery Middle School!
2 days, 6 planter boxes, 4 classes of students and 10 volunteers later we completed Phase 1 of Montgomery Middle School garden project. It was great working with the school and with the architecture, engineering, math and science students teaching them how to build garden beds, clear the site, fill the planters with soil and mix the soil with compost. They helped out greatly!  We will be hosting our next garden build over the weekend in the next few weeks. We are looking for a team of volunteers and if you would like to participate and get involved email Kasi Schnell at Kudos to Kasi for doing the designs in-house and to Nate for being our lead carpenter, we've got a great team we are working with!

Team Kenya - We're ready to go!

Team Kenya!

A team of students from the NewSchool of Architecture and Design will be heading out to Kenya at the beginning of August to work with two of our partnering organizations, Village Volunteers and Common Ground Africa in Kitale, Kenya. The team will be responsible for providing designs for a girl’s school (Lenana Girls High School) and drawings plans to support a sports field at Pathfinder Academy. Sporting events will host teams from surrounding villages and farmers from the communities of the participating teams can bring their produce to sell and trade. This will create a sustainable food market where communities only grow what is best suited to their area and meet in the central location in order to exchange crops. The complex in addition to the market and athletic facilities will include restrooms, locker rooms and HIV education and testing facilities.

In addition to fundraising individually, the team has created a group fundraising page and we will be highlighting their video in our next newsletter. If you would like to make a contribution of $10, $15, $25 or more to support this project and their efforts, you may do so by clicking here.  Stay tuned and follow us on this trip!

Press play and come with us to Guatemala!

Bottle School Projects

We are looking to round up a team of volunteers, architects and designers of all flavors to contribute towards the advancement of bottle school projects in Guatemala. In partnership with Hug It Forward, a non-profit that empowers rural communities in Guatemala to build "bottle schools" using plastic soda bottles and other organic trash, you will have the opportunity to visit completed bottle schools and schools at different stages of construction, and speak with architects, engineers, masons, teachers and community members about the bottle school construction process over the course of 10 days, in addition to assisting with the current bottle school projects. If you are interested in participating or putting a team together, we invite anyone who would like to participate in this specific program. Send us an email to Sandra at We offer year round opportunities and look forward to hearing from you and don't forget to press play on the video above!
