Opening Discussion Revisioning the city: people at the forefront of cultural urban policy & Exhibition of Selected Works
Sir JJ School of Art | 14th October 2016 | 4pm-7.00pm

ArtOxygen announces the opening discussion of [en]counters 2016 Revisioning the city: people at the forefront of cultural urban policy together with Prof. Vishwanath Sabale (Dean, JJ College of Art) with the participating artists at Sir JJ School of Art, Department of Drawing & Painting, Main Hall, on 14 October 2016 from 4pm.

Since early October, artists have activated various sites in Mumbai through guerrilla actions, participatory works, installations and performances. As the works travel across diverse spaces in the city, they trigger a questioning of how art is made and received. By allowing a more cognitive understanding and experience of everyday, local issues and by opening up creativity to multiple collaborations, it sets forth a much more layered, reciprocal and fuller artistic process.
The work in the open space is no longer just a spectacular object. Instead, it becomes an embodiment of varied capacities, skills, knowledge systems.
We question, together with the artists, whether subversive artistic processes have the potential to distort existing social structures through the simple task of 'making' the work? How does the artist retain a balance between proximity to local issues and aesthetics? And finally, what is the role that such initiatives could play in creating a sense of renewal of the spaces we use and inhabit?

A selection of the works produced during the first week of [en]counters 2016 - Bori Bunder @ Platform 8 will be exhibited. The artists participating in the discussion will be Peggy Chan, Wong Chun Hoi, Teja Gavankar, Owais Husain, Wong Ka Ying, Pradeep L Mishra, Chu Yiu Wai & Mak Ying Tung.

[en]counters 2016 – Bori Bunder @ Platform 8 is organized in partnership with Art Together Ltd (Hong Kong), Avid Learning, Institute of Contemporary Indian Art – The Arts Trust, Palladium - Mumbai's Premier Lifestyle Destination, Sir JJ School of Art (India), TAG Contemporary (Italy) with the support of Hong Kong Arts Development Council, The Italian Institute of Culture powered by Lavazza sponsored by UBI Banca & Turkish Airlines.

Chu Yiu Wai's Art Vending Machine etches the facade of the CST Terminus and sets off a new kind of transactional exchange.
Unexpected wishes surprise passersby with Peggy Chan's Happy Birthday.
Temporarily Non-Locatable Public Space #2 is a reminder of former modes of communication as it engages people in a new kind of bodily and virtual spatial experience.
Teja Gavankar's Untitled presents people with 4 dots that need to be connected without forming a square. The invented forms are then compiled into multiple archives that become a representation of newer geometric patterns and designs.
The artist collective Come Inside creates an Obstacle at exit ways formed out of heart-shaped bubble wrap imported from China.
