Priory Theatre, Kenilworth
Hello <<First Name>>!
In early January 1939, the movie Gone With the Wind went into production in Hollywood. Three weeks later the legendary producer David O Selznick closed the set and sacked the then director, George Cukor. With just five days to turn the production around, Selznick hired Ben Hecht to write a new script from the 1,037 pages of Margret Mitchell’s original bestselling novel, which Hecht had never read! In addition, Selznick pulled Victor Fleming off The Wizard of Oz - where he was having trouble with Judy Garland and fornicating Munchkins - to direct.
This is the setting for Ron Hutchinson’s comedy of what happened when the three men were locked in Selznick’s office for five days to write the new 130 page script; acting out the events and characters of one of the most famous love-triangle stories of all time - Scarlett O‘Hara, Rhett Butler, Ashley Wilkes, Melanie Hamilton and even Prissy are all there.
The cast is headed by Dan Gough (pictured, left), as David O Selznick, in what might be one of his most physical roles. We also welcome newcomer Tim Hughes (pictured, right) as Victor Fleming. Ben Hecht is played by Mike Connell (pictured, centre) and the cast is completed by Lauren Schumacher (not pictured), a genuine American, who plays Selznick’s secretary Miss Poppenghul trying to maintain control.
The play is a great antidote to the doldrums of winter. With lots of laughs, we know you'll enjoy watching the antics that resulted in one of the greatest films of all time.
