Best of the Fest Schedule

The wait is over. Here are the 7 feature and 5 short films that will play June 5-October 16 in our annual Best of the Fest series. These twelve films played to sold-out, enthusiastic crowds during the 8th Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival. We're so excited to bring them back for those of you who missed them or so that you can see them again.

David & Me with On Beauty

Join us for one of two screenings of our 2015 Audience Award winners. Both films are portraits of brave people fighting for what's right and those whose voice has been stifled by society, the media, and the criminal justice system. Don't miss them.

Almost There  
This is Not the End

Outsider artist Peter Anton gets discovered by two documentary filmmakers. Whether this is best thing or the worst thing to happen to him is unveiled over the next eight years. Plays with short film This is Not the End.

Friday, July 17 at 7:00: 

Mimi & Dona

What happens when love runs out of time? Director Sartain uses her access to document her grandmother's relationship with her disabled daughter and the poignant ripple effect of Dona's disability has on three generations.

Pie Lady of Pie Town

With a powerful message of community and hope, one block in Athens, GA affords us a window into the underlying dynamics of race relations in a changing American South. Plays with festival favorite Pie Lady of Pie Town.

On Her Own

Sebastopol resident Nancy Prebilich struggles to save Gleason Ranch while her family faces the challenges of a crumbling economy, the deaths of patriarch and matriarch, and a realization of the unsustainability of small family farms.

Friday, September 11 at 4:30 & 7:00:

Beyond the Divide

A peace sign divides a community for decades. Follow the two sides as they find a way to model what it means to make real peace. Plays with the short film Mestizo about mixed racial identity.
Friday, October 16 at 7:00           Jury Award Feature:
How to Change the World

Best of the Fest finale closes the loop as we bring back our stunning Opening Night film about the history of Greenpeace. The Jury described the film as "an ambitious film of epic scale and great relevance to our times. A moving human tale told expertly by the filmmakers"

Jury Award Short: 
Los Olvidados 

Artist Ramiro Gomez's incredible guerilla art work in Southern California shows the invisible people who are the backbone of daily life. He even expertly placed one in front of the Center for the Arts during the festival. The Jury said they chose this film "for contributing to the art of personal storytelling as the keystone for understanding and connecting in a world where we forget those whom we cannot see."
