Quote of the month

"The two most powerful warriors are Patience & Time"

- Leo Tolstoy

Message from Manisha

Let's just be blunt, we’ve had a yucky start to the year in the financial markets. Domestic and many international stock indices were both down in the mid-single digits for the month of January. As I highlight below in my WSJ blog post on embracing bear markets, this is normal and not to be feared. A properly thought out investment plan should always incorporate the expectation for such periods; patience and time are what is required in the interim. However, if you are struggling with a case of the investment blues, I highly recommend reading this piece by my colleague, Buckingham and BAM Alliance Director of Research Larry Swedroe, on “Avoiding Investment Depression.”
Of particular interest to me personally was the incorporation of ideas from a nifty book on brain science called “The Upward Spiral: Using Neuroscience to Reverse the Course of Depression, One Small Change at a Time.” (If you, like me have struggled with depression and anxiety or know someone who has, I highly recommend reading this book). The crux of the argument is that seemingly small changes in your daily habits and outlook can literally cause your brain circuitry to rewire in more positive and nurturing ways.  Whether the result is the increased confidence to stick with your investment plan – or to improve other areas of your health and well-being – the message that incremental, baby steps can lead to meaningful long-term results is a welcome one in uncertain times.
