Take on #GE2017 and join the Bureau Local hub!

In the wake of the snap election announcement, you won’t find us, or this network, sitting still. We’re taking this opportunity to launch the digital platform that will allow us to work together on local and national stories.

The Bureau Local has been set up by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism to support data-driven public interest reporting in newsrooms across the UK.

The aim is to build a unique community of reporters, data experts, community activists, open data champions and more who are passionate about local journalism and the role it should play in holding power to account.

#GE2017

We’ve been talking about it, blogging about it, getting stories published about it, signing people up for it, travelling the country to talk about it and most importantly, surveying you all about it.

And now IT IS HERE.

We are launching the digital space for all 300 of us to chat, share ideas and resources and ultimately, collaborate on investigations together. We’re starting with the General Election (local elections too) and building from there.

This is where it’s all happening. Join now and let’s get started!

Slack will be the place for day to day conversation but we will still email you from time to time to bring the best bits to your attention (in case you miss it) and invite you to future investigations and events.

Keep spreading the word

We have 300 people signed up to our network - journalists and tech-experts - from Tunbridge Wells to Derry! Our biggest concentration is in London but we also have groups of members in Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and Cardiff and others scattered across the UK.

While this is brilliant, we would all benefit from having more members in more places - especially when tackling the election.

So, make sure to pass on to colleagues, friends and the passerby!

One more thing…

Remember that survey we asked you to take last week?

If you haven’t taken it…

Please do! It only takes 10 minutes of your time and is hugely valuable for shaping this network (below).

If you have, thank you so much!

You were one of 55 to respond. Many of you recommended Slack which is why we are using it as a platform! Stay tuned: we will be telling you more about the survey findings in our next email - once we get some more responses *hint, hint*.

And here’s your roundup. In the past week we...

  • Attended the Ferret’s Fact Service launch in Glasgow and meet up with Glaswegians from the network while we were there. Notes and thoughts here.
  • Published a Press Gazette piece calling on journos to join us on the General Election, here.
  • Announced we will be hosting drinks after the Regional Press Awards on May 19 (Join!).
  • Announced we will be hosting a Hack Brexit session at Data Harvest in Belgium May 18 where we will be working with those interested to open up and make accessible EU spending to the UK. Info here.
  • Got some press in the Drum.
  • and in the NUJ from our trip to Oxford.
