If you follow Brene Brown, you might know the quote that inspired the tile of her book 'Daring Greatly' - it's a quite famous one by Theodore Roosevelt and in part, it goes like this:

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; ... and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”

I was reminded of this the other day as I was complaining to my husband about someone I know who is doing YouTube videos based on the evidence in the 'Making a Murder' documentary/trial. (Yes, I am still following that. I wanted to be a lawyer in my younger days so let's say that's why, okay?)

I was running my mouth about how all she does is take information from Reddit and regurgitate it to her minions and it's not like she's saying anything new and then a thunderbolt from the blue smacked me on the head with this one thought "At least she's out there doing it. What are you doing, Lisa?".

Uhhhhh. Say what now?

She is 'daring greatly' and I'm sitting here on the sidelines criticizing what she does and how she's doing it. So easy, that. Much harder to show up and 'rock your passion', innit? 

Why is that, do you think? I mean, I could talk to a wall about things I truly care about (sometimes the hubs plays the role of the wall as I discuss criminal law theory with him) so what's stopping me from getting out there and talking about the work I am passionate about doing? 

For many of us, it's talking about our skills in the metaphysical arena in front of skeptics or naysayers. For others, it's feeling like they're not skilled enough to get out there and talk to people or that they don't know how to even differentiate themselves from similar practitioners. So, they sit around and wait for clients to somehow show up, all their fears and worries about judgement packed in a little bag next to them.

Here's the thing about the woman on YouTube: she gives not one crap what anyone thinks of her, what she says or how she says it. She's outrageous, smokes like a chimney, cusses like a sailor and, in short, is fully herself. No pretense at all. 

She may not think she's 'daring greatly' because for her, it feels natural to just be who she is. But to my mind, she is. 

So much of what I help others step into is their authentic selves, even if it means being judged and criticized.And since it's a good idea to 'walk your talk', I even created a short video talking about why I'm changing up Aligned + Unleashed. I've got little makeup on, in play clothes and my dogs are goofing around and interrupting me. But it's me. Fully and authentically.

I was challenged by the Universe to quit criticizing others and put myself (back) out there. I stepped up to it. 

May I challenge you to be the one in the ring, daring greatly? Whatever 'daring greatly' means to you, are you open to trying it? And if the answer is no, what holds you back?
