Greetings Georgia Tech Parents and Families!

On behalf of the Division of Student Life and Parent & Family Programs, it is my pleasure to welcome the parents of new and returning students to a new academic year at Georgia Tech. For those of us that work at Georgia Tech, this is our favorite time of the year because the campus truly comes to life. There is a buzz all over campus with the various events and activities geared to promote campus involvement and student success. Please encourage your student(s) to attend these planned events so they learn more about campus life, get connected to other Georgia Tech students, and have some Yellow Jacket fun!

Parent & Family Programs has been busy this summer with welcoming families at FASET Orientation and planning Family Weekend which occurs this year on September 30 – October 2. We invite both our new and returning families to come to campus and celebrate the weekend with your student(s) and extended Georgia Tech community! Family Weekend registration opened on August 8, and I encourage you register as soon as possible. For more information, including the schedule-at-a-glance and discount codes for hotels, visit
This first edition of the ParentNews for 2016-2017 is filled with information for both new and returning families. Conversation Corner
Designed to facilitate meaningful conversations about timely student issues, the "Conversation Corner" provides suggested conversations parents and families may want to have with their student.

These questions will help your family check-in with your student at the end of August after they have moved in and started classes.
How’s the relationship with your roommate?
Students often come to college with the expectation that their roommate is or will be their best friend forever. This occasionally happens. However, more often it does not. Setting realistic expectations for the relationship may help create a more collaborative living arrangement conducive to respect and negotiation as opposed to social priorities. Encourage your student to use the "Roommate Agreement" provided by the Department of Housing staff to negotiate study hours, cleaning responsibilities, sleeping habits, visiting hours, etc. This document will be useful if a conflict arises in the future.
What are you doing to meet new people and learn about campus?
It is important for students to get out of their rooms the first week and explore what campus has to offer. Welcome Home Month and R.A.T.S Week hosts multiple events every day during the first week and month of classes intended to help students meet other students. A calendar of events is available at
How is your first week of class?
Many students will experience scheduling issues their first week. Most students are not overwhelmed with course work the first week, but it is important to start establishing good work habits. Dropping in on professors during their office hours is also a good activity during the first week, though many students find this activity intimidating. Suggest that they go with a classmate to help relieve some of the anxiety. See the Center for Academic Success website at for suggestions.
