Greetings Georgia Tech Parents and Families,

We are back in full swing on campus as students have been in class for over two weeks. If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to register for Family Weekend 2016 on September 30 - October 2. Family Weekend occurs at the end of Week 6, which is typically after the first round of exams for the semester, so your students will appreciate some special time with you. Year after year, we look forward to celebrating what makes Georgia Tech a great place to be with more than 3,000+ participants. We have made a few changes for this year, so returning families will note some new events, such as GT Family Night at the Georgia Aquarium. We think you will enjoy spending the weekend with us, but don't just take our word for it — take a look at the video from Family Weekend 2015. To learn more about Family Weekend and to register today, visit Please note that Family Weekend registration closes on September 15, 2016, or once we reach capacity for our events. Family Weekend did sell out in 2015.

As many of our new families know from FASET Orientation, I don’t like the term “helicopter parent” because I think it sends the message to families that they should not be involved in their college student’s life. We know that students will call parents for advice or guidance and we want parents to have the right tools to assist their student, which is why the motto in our office is “when parents and families are informed, students benefit.” Parent & Family Programs prefers the image of a tandem bicycle — your student is on the front of the bike finding their own path in life and you are on the back – still supporting, still cheering, still helping pedal up those hard hills of college life.

We know this year will be full of challenges and celebrations and we hope we can support both you and your student along the way. Please don’t hesitate to contact us at 404-385-1396 or by email at if you have any questions. We hope to see many of you at Family Weekend at the end of September!

Happy Reading!
