Greetings Georgia Tech Parents and Families!

This is the final newsletter of the academic year and I hope that all of our students and families have had special experiences and made some great memories. I have enjoyed working with all my Yellow Jacket families this year. It has truly been my pleasure to serve you!

As we prepare for Commencement and transition to the summer, the Parents Program will be transitioning as well. The Parents Program was recently renamed Parent & Family Programs to allow us to be more inclusive of all of our students. We value and appreciate parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, and other family and friends who help and support Georgia Tech students.

To our graduating families, we wish you and your student much success in the future! We look forward to seeing many of you this weekend at Commencement where we will be passing out “Proud Parent,” “Proud Grandparent,” and “Proud of our Grad” buttons and stickers so you can show off your pride and joy for your student’s well-earned accomplishment! The Parent & Family Programs staff hopes you will continue to stay in touch with Georgia Tech after graduation. Some families continue to help with parent panels and volunteering to help with various events throughout the year.

To our returning parents, we are looking for parent volunteers to help with upcoming FASET Orientation sessions to welcome incoming students and their families. More details can be found in this edition of ParentNews in the Volunteer section. We also will be reaching out to families in early August to help assist and welcome new families to campus during move-in weekend.
Lastly, don’t forget to mark your calendars for Family Weekend 2016, which will be held this year on September 30 – October 2, 2016. A new addition for this year will be our Georgia Tech Family Night at the Aquarium on Friday, September 30 from 6-11 pm. Family Weekend has booked the entire Aquarium just for our students and families to explore and enjoy the night together. Registration will go live on August 1. Volunteer Opportunities
There are a few opportunities to volunteer this spring.  Whether it is meeting prospective parents in your area or sharing goodwill with parents of graduating students, the Parents Program needs your help.

Volunteers Needed for FASET Orientation
We are currently seeking Georgia Tech parents and family members to sit on the Student and Parent Panel during FASET 2016. New parents and families attending FASET will be able to ask questions to panel members about their Georgia Tech experience. Both local and out-of-state family members are encouraged to volunteer. If you are an out-of-state family member and will be in Atlanta during the times listed below, we would love for you to share your experiences with new families!

Topics might include:
  * Sending your student to a campus located in an urban area
  * Prepping your student for the transition to college life
  * Setting expectations with your student about communication – how often and when
  * Discussing money management with your student, including how much the first year really costs
  * Learning about the appropriate resources available for your student when he/she asks for help
  * Encouraging your student to get involved

These panels will be from 4:30 - 5:10 p.m. on the following days (please arrive no later than 4:15 p.m. on the day(s) you sit on the panel):

Summer Freshman FASET: Wednesday, June 15, Student Center Ballroom

Conversation Corner
Designed to facilitate meaningful conversations about timely student issues, the "Conversation Corner" provides suggested conversations parents and families may want to have with their student.

Let’s discuss the rules for being back at home… Parents and students may have different expectations for each other for the summer. Discussing expectations for going out and coming home late at night, attendance at family functions, household chores, using the family car and money management will be helpful as your student returns home for the summer.
