New work from the Studio at the Screw Factory!

This group of work is called “There is Hope”,  a series of 10 various size vase forms enveloped in hand printed woodblock textures and colors and assembled into vessels enveloping a "nugget" symbolizing hope. The nugget is obscured in the vessels and takes some looking to find.

Glass, woodcut prints, various handmade paper, acrylic paint, thread. Sizes vary from 6″ to 12″ high.

Below is a side view of the group, and details of one of the pieces. To see details of all of the vessels go to my website: https://jenniferleachgallery.com.

Wood Engraving 101

I took a 4-week wood engraving course online with wood engraving expert Joanne Price last month. I usually work in woodcut on the crossgrain of a plank of wood, so learning wood engraving (cutting the image from the end grain of a dense type of wood such as boxwood) was a whole new approach to cutting the wood. New tools, tiny scale, very detailed work. Pictured above is me learning to hold the wood engraver, called a "spit sticker," and my first wood engraving designed to try a number of different mark making techniques. I called it "End Grain 101."

The Sketchbook Project

Mindy Tousley, a member of our Salon group, got each member a sketchbook from the Brooklyn Art Library to fill with sketches and send in for their collection. The Library collects sketchbooks from all over the world and uses them to lend to students, artists, or anyone interested in looking at them! Above are some of the pages from my sketchbook which is now a part of the library. To see tons of sketchbook and learn about The Sketchbook Project, go to https://www.sketchbookproject.com.
