A World Where Black Lives Matter

Hi family,

This is the first update from the BLMUK organising team.

Black people and other racialised communities are living through a crisis in Britain today. A crisis that affects our ability to survive and thrive.

Here a few examples of the racist crisis in Britain:

  1. Black African women having a mortality rate four times higher than White women.
  2. Young Black people are twice as likely to be unemployed than White young people
  3. Black workers with degrees are earn 23% less on average than White workers
  4. Black children are 3 times more likely to be permanently excluded than the entire pupil population

Our daily struggle involves the dangers of the police and state brutality suffered by individuals like Sean Rigg, Sarah Reed and most recently Dalian Atkinson, to the systemic discrimination in health, employment and education.

Our first action on the 5th August saw the shut down major transport hubs. This was our response to the crisis of black life in Britain today. That evening, we came together in London and elsewhere to discuss what we could do in our local areas. Below are some photos from that day with some of the beautiful ideas written up.

Our determination to continue this work was shown on Tuesday 6th September at London City Airport. Newham is one of the most deprived boroughs in the country yet money is being poured into industries which are fueling the climate crisis.

We have made a strong start but we want to reach out to the community more, develop stronger roots and connections across the country.

So we are asking you to connect with others around you, and think about how together we can continue this work locally. Either by supporting existing groups or creating new groups to end these racist crises that harm our lives every day. To get involved, please update your profile here and tell us what groups, churches, mosques or other associations you are part of. If you know people who would be interested in this work. Please ask them to sign up using this link: http://bit.do/BLMUKeList.

In the months ahead we will be planning to launch local and national gatherings to learn from each other and discuss how we can move forward together.

It is time for each one, teach one. We need as many people as possible to fulfil our birthright and promise. To do as our parents and grandparents did and work to create a world where our lives matter.
