Thank you for your help!
A huge thank you to everyone that helped in EV's hour of need - we reached the target and the last two months have been spent working hard on restoring the site. The tough bits of programming - the Media Archive and Forum have also now been recoded, reinstalled and as much data as possible restored. We are fully back up and running! There are a few tweaks still to make - the size of the navigation tab font in the Forum, and the category descriptions in the Media Archive, for example - but I'll get those sorted over the next few weeks and after that start adding lots of content to the Media Archive.
There is a LOT to add, especially now that I have permission from most of Ultravox's main studio photographers, to use their images on the site. And Chris Cross's own behind-the-scenes photography over the years. And Chrysalis and the band's management's own newspaper and magazine cuttings archives. There's lots to come. Watch this space!
Unfortunately, we did lose some data from the Forum - the last five years of posts. It turned out that NONE of the exported database backups I'd made since the switch to the VPS in 2011 (Virtual Private Server, where you have more resources for a smoother experience on a site that gets this much traffic) had completed properly, and were unusable. We had to reinstall the old UBB Classic, import the pre-VPS UBB Classic member files, posts etc, then convert it all to UBB Threads and upgrade everything to the latest version of Threads. Then fix it to look like it the rest of the site, since things have changed around in the upgrade (hence few niggles still to iron out).
Let's just say it's been an "interesting" couple of months.
Still - having the first ten years' worth of posts - and the 3,000+ members, avatars etc - is better than nothing at all, which is what it was initially looking like. Particularly when there are posts on there from fans and friends that are no longer with us, and so much searchable UV knowledge on there too. I'm very happy that we managed to save all of that.
So the Forum is open for business once more, where you can find likeminded Ultravox experts and knowledge galore (and yes, the backups now work!). Do drop in and say hello!
