Welcome to this month’s newsletter giving details of what the BID team have been doing and the next things planned.
A Cleaner Ilkley
Since the last newsletter, the paved areas around the central part of town have been washed and what a difference it has made!

We’ve received some amazing comments from businesses and members of the public and we hope you agree this has made the town even more attractive and instils a real sense of pride. As part of the process, the shop windows of the businesses were washed meaning that the day after, there was virtually no evidence the ‘Clean Team’ had been in town other than the place looking spic and span. We are looking to repeat this work annually in Spring each year from 2020.

The Ilkley’s Got Heart campaign has got off to a great start. Let’s put Ilkley on the map for something really positive for the whole community!

Ilkley BID is the headline sponsor of this event as we try put Ilkley on the map for being a ‘town of life-savers’. All BID businesses who have one or more members of staff who complete the course will be featured in BID publicity and the member of staff will be entered into a draw to win a voucher for £100, £50 or £25 which will be drawn at the beginning of January (deadline to complete the course is  31st December 2019).

The voucher will be valid to spend with any of the Ilkley businesses who have completed the course. So by encouraging your staff to complete this short (approx. 45 minutes), free online course covering the basics of first aid, the business gets publicity and the chance that one of the prize winners will choose to spend their winnings with you! To get started, simply visit .The course can be completed in stages, each of the 5 modules takes around 10 minutes.
The Parking Survey is Live

The parking survey we promised is now live. This should be shared with your employees, colleagues and business associates. So far, we have had nearly 900 responses but only 36 BID from levy paying businesses. Please take 10 minutes to do it as it is really important we understand who is suffering and who is benefiting as a result of the changes. We cannot push for change without robust evidence.

Transport Links
One of the Directors and I met with a representative from Transdev bus company to talk about the ways we could link and improve services for the benefit of businesses or potentially fund buses into Ilkley for special events to help footfall – this is a longer term plan so watch this space.

I attended a joint meeting with our MP John Grogan, Kyle Green – District Councillor, Tom Franks from Ilkley Town Council and representatives from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to talk about the possible provision of a ‘hopper’ bus to service rail commuters which could also be useful for town centre workers. Click on the button below to take part in the survey.

Who's visiting Ilkley?

I attended a Visitor Profiling session which provided information about visitor behaviour both in Ilkley specifically and also across the Bradford district as a whole. This research was funded by Bradford Council and provided some valuable insights into the ‘who, how, when and what’ relating to visitors to our town which will be useful to us when considering promotional campaigns.
Christmas Activities

We will be organising a Christmas Elf Trail in December. If you would like to host an Elf in your window and take part in this event, please email me. We  are also intending to do an Ilkley Christmas Gift Guide. If you would like to promote your business or products in this campaign, please send through details including the price and image of up to 3 products and also who they would be most suitable for. Ideally we want to showcase some budget options, some moderate, some luxury and something quirky for various family members and friends.
Real Food Ilkey Stalls for Levy Payers

As a trial, Ilkley BID agreed to fund up to 3 stalls each month from October to December  at the Real Food Ilkley market for our levy payers. This is a great way for any business to promote themselves to a new audience in this prominent position on The Grove.

We have also been issuing monthly surveys to those businesses who are open on Sundays asking whether the extension of the market and the subsequent road closure on The Grove facilitate the market  has any business impact. If this affects you and you haven’t received the survey, please get in touch.

We still have space for 2 BID funded stalls at the Real Food Ilkley Market in December. You don’t have to be a food business to take part – Dot Harrison from Prickly Pear on South Hawksworth street took a stall in October and said:

It was great to be seen by a completely different audience and promote ourselves on the monthly market. People are creatures of habit and this gave us the opportunity to be visible to those who might not usually walk past our shop. It was so good that we decided to pay for a stand at the November market too and hopefully will also be there in December.
Ilkley Stakeholder Meeting

Stu Hyde, BID Chairman, and I attended a multi-disciplinary meeting about general concerns from all stakeholders about issues in Ilkley. The meeting involved numerous representatives including all district councillors, representatives from the Town Council,  senior representatives from W Y Police as well as representatives from five Bradford Council divisions.

Cost Cutting Initiatives for Ilkley Businesses
Escalating costs were cited as a major concern for many businesses when we chatted with them during the development of the BID. We are therefore delighted to have engaged Meercat Associates who are specialists at working with BIDs around the country, saving businesses on many overheads including utility bills, merchant services, insurance and many other essential but costly business expenses.

To find out more, please register to come along to our launch event at Fuggle & Golding on Leeds Road on Thursday 14th November from 5.45pm to 6.45pm. For catering purposes, please register here :
Customer Services Training with World Host

On Monday 11th and 18th November, we are hosting Shipley College who are coming to deliver two days of Customer Service Training. This incorporates City & Guilds level 2 in Customer Service and also World Host training, the highly regarded training which was completed by all London Olympic Games volunteers. Providing both days are attended, the courses are completely free (value of £340) and we will be providing lunch. We have a few spaces left so if you would like to attend or put a staff member forward, please email Helen –
Ilkley Watch
Whilst thankfully Ilkley is  not a major centre of crime, many of our larger retailers suffer with high levels of shop-lifting, anti-social behaviour and other crimes. We are looking into the relaunch of the Shop Watch scheme and also to incorporate the current Pub Watch but with a wider remit (such as first aid assistance) which we will launch as Ilkley Watch (names under consideration!).

We have had radios on trial and meet for the second time with interested parties, including the police, on Wednesday 6th November at 4pm – please get in touch if you would like to attend this or future meetings.
What's in it for me?

We had some enquiries from hairdressers and beauticians enquiring about which BID projects would give them the best value. We have therefore decided to host an informal early evening event to bring these businesses together, along with health businesses (dentists, chiropractors, physiotherapists etc.) to talk about how the BID can best help their businesses over a drink and a nibble.

Please register here to attend:

Business Photography for Levy Payers

Ilkley BID are funding member busineses to get professional business photography done entirely for free by Karen Ross Photography. The photographs can be photos of you and your team (taken either at your premesis or at the Karen Ross Photography studio), or of your business in general, whichever you choose. You'll be entitled to two fully edited shots, with the option to purchase further shots at a specially discounted £15 each.

You'll be able to use all of the shots taken on your website, social media, marketing collateral or however you like.

Ilkley BID is funding this for 10 businesses per month on a first come, first served basis, so please contact us at to put your business on the list for this great opportunity.
A final note...

Thank you to those businesses who completed our initial baseline BID survey. We will be looking at all responses to see what suggestions have been made and can be included in the plans for the forthcoming months. The results of this survey will be used to monitor our performance as the BID gathers momentum.

The BID levy invoices issued in June were for a 6 month period and the first full year bill be issued by Bradford Council at the end of November. Due to software constraints, we can only bill a full year from December to November annually which means that your final BID invoice for this first 5 year term will be a 6 month bill which will be issued in December 2023. If payment by the due date causes any issues for you, please do get in touch.

As always, I am happy to come out to see you or please do come along to my drop-in sessions on Tuesdays from 1-4.30pm and Wednesdays 8.30 – noon if you have any questions or would like to get involved.  Please send an email, drop in or call me on 07884 376057.

With kind regards, on behalf of myself and the voluntary Directors,

Helen Rhodes, Ilkley BID Manager
