Selam Newsletter September

Dear all,  we hope you are all well and ready for a heads up on what's happening at Selam at the moment. Although summer is officially over and rain and yellow leaves have taken it's toll on us - we are all still buzzing with excitement about the Polar Music Prize days 26-28 August! It was a beautiful prize ceremony featuring top artists like Neneh Cherry and Timbuktu interpreting Youssou N'Dours magical songs on stage. Selam had the honour to host the After Party to the Youssou N'Dour concert with a long line of fantastic live performers and DJ's, and Mr N'Dour himself with musicians and team all came and joined the party, how about that! Here is link to some great picks from the event on our Facebook Page.

No rest for the wicked, we have great things in store - so we hope you will enjoy the newsletter to find out what's next!

All the best,
Your Selam team

Inner Vision
Addis Abeba, Ethiopia

It has been nearly eight months since Selam-Ethiopia implemented the Inner Vision project, designed to upgrade the skills and the opportunities of the visually impaired and the blind with educational support and networking facilities.
Recently Selam-Ethiopia organized an audition for blind vocalists residing in Addis Ababa, in the age brackets of 16-30. The objective of this event is to recruit two performers to participate in a music album production within the project.

In August a workshop was conducted, in cooperation with the organization Novib. The half day workshop focused on four key issues namely: validate the report carried out within the project on the status of access to higher music education in Ethiopia for the visually impaired and the blind; Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for these groups to seek access to higher education in music; define the priority areas and types of capacity strengthening programs for allowing universal access to higher music education in the country; and propose policy alternatives through lobby and awareness activities to mitigate obstacles to universal access for high education in music.
The workshop brought together twenty-nine participants from civil society organizations working on issues related to disabilities and music education institutions in Ethiopia.
The project is implemented in cooperation with the Swedish Postcode Lottery.

Swedish artists to Zambia
Selam is a partner to the Swedish Institute and The Swedish Embassy in Zambia in the project Sweden@Zambia! Metal from Botswana to Sweden
What a lot of people don't know is that Botswana has one of Africa’s largest and fastest growing metal scenes, which has been growing at a rapid pace over the past ten years! It is a relatively large subculture both in cities and rural areas. During our visit to Gaborone in Botswana previously in the spring 2013 looking at the metal scene and the music industry at large, we decided to present the country’s most popular band, Skinflint, in Sweden!

On location in Gaborone Selam cooperated with the organization Botswana Society For The Arts, in order to explore the possibility of a longer-term cultural exchange between the countries. Skinflint mixes traditional heavy metal with lyrics from traditional ancestral beliefs, tribal wars and Juju occultism! This unique mix has helped the band to get global exposure and been discovered by fans from around the world.
On location in Sweden, the band will among other places perform at Scharinska in Umeå on 31 October and at Debaser Hornstulls in Stockholm, November 2 at Selam & Debaser's new club Wax & Gold! During their stay in Sweden the band will also also meet with the media and other stakeholders within the Swedish music industry.

With support from The Swedish Arts Council.

After Cesaria Evora’s passing Mayra Andrade has often been called the musical heiress and innovator of Cape Verde.
She will perform in Stockholm at Nalen on the 1st of November.
