47 days left before Halloween. Don't miss anything about the Dragon of Shandon Samhain Parade preparation.

The 7th Dragon of Shandon Samhain Parade

Welcome to the first Dragon of Shandon Newsletter of 2012 which we will be issuing on a fortnightly basis in the run up to this year's parade.  Now in its 7th year the Dragon has grown from a small community celebration of Halloween into Ireland's largest night-time street parade with over 400 participants involved.  The parade is the result of an extensive outreach and participatory program that spans several months of workshops with youth groups, the community and voluntary sector, schools and voluntary participants.  Participating groups this year include Shandon Cairde Youth Club,  Blarney Street Youth groups, Buttera (Butter Exchange Brass Band), Naomhoga Chorcai, Cope Foundation, The Firkin Crane, Dowtcha Puppets,  North Mon, North Presentation and St Vincent's School Completion Programmes, Gurranabraher Youth Development Centre, St. Kevin's After School Program, Middle Parish Youth Club, The Life Centre, The Glen CDP and Blackpool Community Youth Club and CCAL Drama Group as well as adult volunteers.

Working with large numbers of participants is at the heart of each annual Dragon of Shandon Samhain Parade.
Each year up to 100 individuals take part in our voluntary participation program learning skills in giant prop and puppet making, mask making and costume design, project development and event management.  Some volunteer a couple of hours on the day of the event, others have a longer term engagement spanning several months.
Many  return on an annual basis from Ireland, Europe and beyond and leave each year equipped with new skills, learning and friends gained during the course of the project.
See below for information on how you can get involved with this years event or go to

Colaiste Stiofan Naofa Dance Crew

This year we welcome back the Colaiste Stiofan Naofa Dance Crew who joined the team last year. Led by PJ Kirby, Dance Faciliator, the crew will collaborate with the Cathedral Cairde Youth Group to create a unique funky and most importantly freaky dance choreography for this years event.
"Working with the team at Cork Community Art Link has been a great experience", says PJ, "and taking to the streets for The Dragon of Shandon is a unique experience for us as dancers".
See footage of the crew demonstrating their skills here in last years Dragon of Shandon Parade

Leandro is part of our CCAL Placement Program which facilates students from abroad to come and work with our team to develop new skills and gain experience in the arts.
