Tapspace - creativity in percussion

January 2014 Newsletter

HAPPY NEW YEAR…AND THANKS!

2013 was a great year for Tapspace, no question about it. In addition to quite a number of in-house operational adjustments that proved beneficial, we were able to grow our catalog immensely this year.  Thank you dear friends, peers, customers, fans, and the guy who has been delivering our water for years but still can’t seem to remember where or when to leave it. You continue to fuel us forward. Be prepared to be amazed in 2014!
Photos from our booth at PASIC last month!
Thanks to all our friends who stopped by at the Midwest Clinic International Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago this past December. We had a blast. We also ate our faces off out there!

  • Duration
  • Difficulty level
  • Number of players
  • Featured instrument
  • Type of accompaniment
  • Mallet technique required (2 or 4 mallets)
  • Max marimba range
  • No. of marimbas, vibraphones, and/or timpani required
  • Musical style
  • …and many more!
On any page where our titles are displayed, look to the left column to find the various applicable filters. Try it out and find the perfect piece!

Virtual Drumline Tip

ACHIEVE MORE REALISM BY MIXING MALLET SELECTIONS

Virtual Drumline allows for you to select from multiple mallet types such as hard, medium, soft, aluminum, brass, bright plastic, rubber, medium-dark, etc. depending on the instrument. This gives you the ability to refine the color of your sound in detail…the same way a percussionist would! This is just one of the many ways VDL offers you creative control.

Many VDL users arrange for large percussion ensembles or marching bands in which several marimbas or vibraphones are being used. Since arrangers may not initially have a clear idea of what mallets each player will use before they begin, it's not uncommon to simply set the project up using stock "medium" mallet instruments on all the mallet staves.

Mallet lines are often doubled in a large ensemble setting. As a result, staves that use the same exact VDL instrument selection can often lead to a synthetic playback sound. This is due to the fact that these staves, while playing in unison, are essentially triggering duplicate samples. When strictly synchronized, this can even lead to phase cancellation*.

Are you being overly "Medium"?

People often choose the medium mallet selections by default. Instead, use a variety of mallet selections. For example, if you're writing for three marimbas, use the "hard" mallet instrument for the Marimba 1 staff, "medium" for Marimba 2, and "soft" for Marimba 3. This may not be what the live ensemble actually does, but for your playback purposes, you'll have a more varied selection of samples being activated…which is ultimately closer to what you'd hear in a live setting anyway.

It isn't always about rosewood.

Since Virtual Drumline gives you the ability to choose between rosewood marimbas or marimbas with synthetic bars, this effectively doubles your options when it comes to marimba variety! Again, your actual ensemble may not be using any synthetic marimbas, but using them in your project files can give your VDL playback more variety and realism.

Click here to listen to an example of a piece that calls for 5 marimbas and was sequenced with Virtual Drumline using a combination of rosewood and synthetic marimbas as well as a combination of different VDL mallet selections.

Variety is the spice!

In short, the more instrument variety you set up within your project, the richer and more realistic your playback will sound.

JIM CASELLA

Jim Casella
Jim Casella isn't just the composer of some of the most popular pieces in the Tapspace catalog. He's also not just the former award-winning percussion arranger for the Santa Clara Vanguard (1996-2004) and The Cavaliers (2006-09). And he's also not just the producer/programmer of the sample library, Virtual Drumline, or a composer for TV/Radio commercials. He's also one of the co-founders of Tapspace, the awesome and creative percussion publishing company whose newsletter you are reading this very moment.

Read on to learn a little more about what drives Casella and his tastes in music, beer, and cable TV.

Chain restaurants - good or bad?

I'm impressed that chains can create a consistent experience for their customers, but in most cases I'd rather avoid them. No matter how they market it, it ends up feeling more like a transaction than an experience. Usually, there's more heart and soul put into the food of a local restaurant, whether you're traveling in a foreign country, out of state, or just up the street from your house. Since food is such an pleasurable way to bring people and ideas together, local eats are always more meaningful to me.

How would your friends describe you?

They'd say I work too much, and they'd be right. They'd describe me as intelligent, talented, a good listener, and funny. And I'd probably find sneaky ways not to agree with them and self-depricate instead. I'm working on that.

Are social networking sites like Facebook bringing us closer together or farther apart?

I guess it depends on how people use them. Despite easier access to a wider range of people, I'm afraid they're creating a lot of isolation because there's an addictive nature to it, and it doesn't require people to go out and interact in person. Being an introvert, I've experienced this first-hand and I think it's a little scary how it's rewiring how we connect.

Watch sports or play sports?

Typically, I'd say neither. I was in the marching band! But I enjoy being active so I guess I'd say play them. Besides, I haven't had cable TV in years (best decision ever!), so watching sports isn't as easy as simply turning the TV on.

What is your guiltiest pleasure?

A well-balanced, hoppy IPA. I can thank Portland's creative beer culture for this guilt.

Biggest musical influence.

I'm influenced by everything I listen to. I have a wide range of musical interests that have indirectly informed my own musical voice. Anyone who aims to create something new with their music and can make me feel something will usually end up with repeated plays on my playlist, and will invariably have some sort of musical influence on me.

Star Wars or Star Trek?

Definitely Star Wars. It was a big part of my childhood – I still have my old action figures in a box somewhere.
