An Encouraging Word...

A mother had been teaching her three-year old daughter the Lord's Prayer.  For several evenings at bedtime, she would repeat after her mom the lines from the prayer. Finally, she decided to go solo.  Mom listened with pride as her daughter carefully enunciated each word, right up to the end of the prayer: "Lead us not into temptation," she prayed, "but deliver us some E-mail. Amen."

The prayer some call the “Our Father” and others call “The Lord’s Prayer” is often misunderstood.  Frequently, it is repeated by people from memory, often without much thought.  But Jesus didn’t give his followers this prayer so much to be repeated as to serve as a model or guide for our own praying.

Thursday, May 6th, is the National Day of Prayer.  On that day, I encourage each of us to begin our day reading Matthew 6:9-13.  As we read Jesus’ model prayer, and throughout the day as we recall the prayer from memory, let Jesus’ model be our guide.  Pray Jesus’ prayer after Him, phrase by phrase.  Tell God what each line means to you.  Praise Him or pray about whatever comes to your mind as you follow each part of Jesus’ model prayer.  Then join us at our National Day of Prayer Service that evening, as we praise God together and pray together following Jesus’ model.

We all recognize the importance of praying for our nation in these challenging days.  Make May 6th a day that will bless our nation through our prayers even as we are blessed by learning to pray God’s thoughts after Him.
