Do You Hear What I Hear?
Beat the Post-Holiday Blues!

'Tis the Season for Giving

Do You Hear What I Hear?
IMAGE: Cartoon Carolers.Rumor has it that there might be a rogue group of WBNA holiday carolers roaming the streets of West Bucktown Thursday night, December 15, between 6:30 and 8:30 pm. So when you hear the jingle of sleigh bells and a rousing (if slightly off-key) chorus of “fa la la la las” coming from the street, please open your door and give us a little wave and a smile!
And if you’re so moved by the holiday spirit, feel free to join us as we continue on our merry way. We’ve got lots of good cheer to spread around the neighborhood – and plenty of eggnog to share!

Beat the Post-Holiday Blues!
IMAGE: Sad Santa Dog.If you’re like many of us, January can be a tough month. The parties are over, the presents have been opened, the company is gone, and all you’re left with are those elusive pine needles that keep showing up all over the house.
So now what? How about a “Beat the Post-Holiday Blues Party” with some fabulous friends and neighbors?
That’s right…this year we’re bucking tradition and shifting the WBNA holiday party to Saturday, January 14th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. (Location TBD -- stay tuned for details!) This family-friendly event promises a fun time for all, so grab the kiddos and come play! We’ll get the party started with light appetizers and a round of drinks on us. Please email us at to let us know if we can expect you.
Of course, there are some traditions that are just too important to mess with, which is why we’re also pleased to launch our annual charitable giving campaign. This year, we’re taking up a collection to help support the Maryville Crisis Nursery, a Chicago nonprofit that provides free emergency childcare to families in distress. (See below for details.)  Donations will be accepted through January 14 – click here to be redirected to the WBNA website to contribute via Paypal.
Even if you’re not in a position to make a financial contribution, we encourage everyone attending the post-holiday party to bring a small gift from the “Wish List” in the sidebar at right. These much-needed items are small gestures that make a huge difference to the children and families in the Crisis Nursery's care.
Thanks in advance for your support, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the post-holiday party. Let’s celebrate our achievements of the last 12 months as we plan for even greater success together in the New Year!

'Tis the Season for Giving
IMAGE: Holiday Giving.Meet Tina,* a young mother of three who was in labor with her fourth when she called the Maryville Crisis Nursery in a panic. Scared, anxious and alone, she had no family or friends to look after her children while she gave birth. The Crisis Nursery was able to care for Tina's children while she delivered a healthy baby boy. Not long after, she tapped into the Crisis Nursery's services again so she could get her GED and further her education and career.
Today, Tina is enrolled in college with plans to get her teaching degree. Thanks to the community referrals provided to her by the Crisis Nursery, she was able to to find affordable daycare for her children so she can attend school fulltime.
*Not her real name.
IMAGE: Happy Child. This is just one example of the beautiful work the Maryville Crisis Nursery does every day. The only facility of its kind in the Chicagoland area, the Crisis Nursery provides free emergency care to children whose families are facing an extreme crisis, including domestic violence, homelessness, parental stress, and medical emergencies. The Nursery acts as a safe haven for children from birth to age 6, providing them with a protective and nurturing environment and sheltering them from the potentially damaging fallout that can result from these kinds of family stresses. Their focus is on keeping kids safe while keeping families together.
Every year, the Maryville Crisis Nursery helps dozens of families who call West Bucktown and the 1st Ward home. Please join us in contributing generously to this wonderful organization and its important mission. Click here to be directed to the WBNA website, where you can use your credit or debit card to make a donation through Paypal. Your generosity is greatly appreciated – contributions will be accepted through January 14.
